Fantasy Grounds Virtual Tabletop

Unread post by sir_blacksoutalot »

Is anyone out there running a Fantasy Grounds or Roll20 pnp campaign?

Would love to check out some oldskool D&D. It's been about 40 years (omg), but I'm sure I can pick it up again. These virtual tabletop apps must surely make the game flow more smoothly.

I'm west coast US if anyone has room at the table.

Excited to try!

This is the kind of tool I dreamed about when first starting to play Basic D&D back in high school. So awesome.

As someone who used both methods to play and run ttRPGs, I'd say FG is subjectively the better one as far as features go but my go-to choice is roll20, especially if you are planning to utilize 5th edition D&D. The learning curve is better to utilize fully and finding groups for roll20 is easier in my opinion. If you are just dipping your toes in, roll20 having the option of free to play model is also a bonus.

If there's one warning that I can give you about playing ttRPgs online, that's to be not encouraged if you cannot find a good group that you can mesh well together. You might have to go through a lot of groups and DMs until you find one that lasts more than a few weeks. Due to the absence of players, DMs losing enthusiasm, schedule conflict due to wide arranged timeslots, it is very common for a table to crumble into inactivity. But when you find the right people that are willing to commit, it's very possible to forget that folks are oceans apart in the immersive period of a session.

I run a game on roll20 currently on Tuesdays, unfortunately I'm already packed with 5 players so I can't offer a spot without talking with my players but you are welcome at the very least to hang around and see around how we play if you are interested in seeing it in action until you find a game for yourself.

Heya, Okan! That would be awesome if I could just be a fly on the wall and observe gameplay. As long as it doesn't interfere with others enjoying the game.

I'll shoot you a PM and see if we can work something out. Thanks for the offer!
