Spirit Shamans as Thaumaturges

Unread post by MaskedOne1 »

hey,

can spirit shamans or druids for that matter become Thaumaturges?

as far as i can see it would be easy enough to fullfill the requirements, but the descriptuion says it is for mages and clerics.
also, at level 5 you get planar cohort, this is where i start to wonder if the build i have in mind is even possible.

Planar Cohort
Type of Feat: Class
Prerequisites: Thaumaturgist 5
Specifics: Any creature called for through a Planar Calling or Binding spell will serve the caster permanently. The creature is still unsummoned whenever the caster rests and may also be banished or dispelled. The Gate Spell series is not affected.
Use: Automatic

the wiki says this about planar calling and binding:

Planar Calling Spells bring extraplanar creatures to the material plane. These are considered planar calling:

Lesser Planar Binding
Planar Binding, Greater
Planar Binding
Planar Ally
Greater Planar Ally
Gate
Epic Gate

as far as i know, none of the spells above can be taken/selected from the druid spell list.

would appreciate an answer from someone who knows for certain, not someone who guesses, thank you.

cheers

I would think that only Thaum 4 would make sense for a druid/shaman.

Yes, spirit shamans can become thaumaturges. Without access to planar ally/binding, though, they can't make use of Planar Cohort, so should max out at Thaumaturge 4 as Theodore said. The rest of thaumaturge abilities still benefit spirit shaman.

It's possible scrolls might work for casting planar ally/binding, but you'd need high UMD for them.

but that also means just one summon at a time yes? one in summon slot and none in cohort, so only one at time

and even if i could get the creature from scrolls, they can be bought, surely there will be an issue with caster levels and which creatures can be summoned yes?

Yes, without a planar binding, you will only have one summon, not two. But the first four levels of Thaumaturge buff all summons you use, so it can still be beneficial.

With scrolls, you can get them made at CL15. But I believe only thing level determines with those spells is the duration, which Planar Cohort would negate anyway (if it works properly with scrolls).

i see, i plan on having UMD high enough to use any scroll, so being able to use scrolls woud still be useful, if it works.

does anyone know if it works ?

thanks for the answers so far

It works with scrolls for bards. I am sure it works for SS, but havent used it myself.

I remember being told phantom wolf and bear works as cohorts by a SS Thaum player last year around May while I was looking for advice on Summoner Spirit Shamans. I haven't leveled up one to confirm it myself but perhaps it's possible to test on JEGS or something like that.

If true, it would be so enjoyable to RP. Imagine...both Telthor Companion and Phantom Wolf...and Summons! What a quartet!
