When you think about it, the only real experience we have as Humans is, wait for it, to role-play Humans. Trying to RP as something “exotic” is not as comfortable as it may seem on paper. Even when we are deep in Lore knowledge, read all the novels, AND have a healthy amount of skill in the dramatic arts (or not...), the templates for the non-Human options are sometimes soooo limiting, also boring, that in itself is a massive turn off.
And simply put, it’s less work in the part of the Player to create John or Jane Baldergate. It’s just a game that has only so much RL reward, and when it’s a game uses for RL escapism, that last thing a person is looking for is complexity and/or a demanding experience.

I've been playing the heck out of BG3, and there's more than enough horned and tailed things that you'll meet without having to play one

They probably just want players to try them so they can work out the kinks(and there are many of those... but still, apart from the level cap, the game is pretty damned fun, as long as you can wrap your head around the lore).
So far I've only tried human and elf, githyanki and drow are next on my list to try. I'm not in any rush though, as right now it's way more fun, for me at least, to go scouring the absurd amount of cool dungeons in the game than it is to play around with character customization.

Humans suck in nearly all fantasy and sci-fi settings I looked at. Only settings they don't are those where non-humans are even edgier.
I do agree that we need more lore on how it
feels to be a non-human character, what a day in their life is like, their foods, cuisine.
2E used to do it for FR.
I miss 2E grade lore for elves.

I tend to play non-human races because I like to imagine the effect that culture/reputation might have on my character's psychology. However I don't think the human race sucks. Imho is like the Joker and offers infinite possibilities to build interesting backgrounds and personalities even if premade lore for the race itself might not be much, it just allows more freedom.

It's not the human character that gets me, I most often play humans, it's how nondescript that character is. It's Private NPC that tags along as your first companion in the tutorial level and inevitably dies before the first chapter of the story.

Humans are the OP. They are unpredictable, adaptable, and willing to do whatever it takes to be on top. Other races have silly codes and ethics, or predictable behavior patterns. Humans are the true wild card and the scariest monsters in any fantasy/sci-fi setting.

What actually prevents me from liking BG-3 up to now is the fact there's so many weird races and stuff that I feel out of it.
Also, no variant human from 5e.
But yeah, I'm not surprised that the main type of characters people make is like that. A bit like on BG here the most prominent class was basic fighter a few years ago (I don't know if it's still the case).
Society seems to think everyone wants more different stuff, but it's mostly because some people speak louder than others.

If humans didn't get that free feat at level 1....
Variant 5E human is the same... making it pretty darn superior to most races because of that one single free feat...
If the DM does not allow for variant, then literally any other race is better than human.
