Loth's eye on Nefara Zau'Afin

Unread post by Lambert »

This is not a journal or diary. It is Lolth watching Nefara's actions.

Loth has been watching a new spiderling that has erupted from her birthing nest in Sshamath. She eyes the female with suspicion considering who her mother was, but notes that this one has always been present in the temple honoring her.

The female makes her way through the tunnels with skill and confidence. Lolth notes that this one may prove useful. Walking past the two steel golems the armored devotee of Lolth walks up to the house merchant.

A mailed foot kicks a sleeping fat drow as he lies sprawled on plush cushins.

Adenith struggles to his feet with his hand nursing his bruised behind as he blurts out, "Wha what?!! What is the meaning of this!"

"The meaning is simple fatling, I require you to perform a service," says Nefara unapologetically and matter of factly.

"What!? Who who are you?," inquires the fat male inquisitively, sprinkles of sugar powder falling off his lips from when he fell asleep with a pastry half in his mouth.

But Nefara gives no answer. Her armor plainly bears the markings of Qu'ellar Zau'Afin proudly, but her gaze is penetrating and unresponsive.

"Wait... your eyes... I know those eyes.... Your mother is...," blurts out Adenith, but before he can finish his sentence Nefara picks up a pastry from the table nearby and stuffs it in his mouth. Adenith's eyes go wide with fear and he begins to sweat.

"Clever male. I am not quite ready to announce who my mother was or my father. Suffice it to say you know what will happen to you if you speak out of turn. I may be a simple commoner now, but soon I will rise to a high station and you would do well to understand that," says Nefara with her voice low and her eyes narrow leaning in towards the fat drow.

For his part Adenith gratefully swallows the pastry with one impressive gulp and licks his lips as he slowly nods.

"Very well Jabbress. I understand well your meaning. No more threats are necessary. Now what is it that I can do for you?," inquires the subdued male.

With her voice remaining low Nefara says, "I require a book or books, everything the Qu'ellar has to offer in regards to the Ice Queen who reigns on the surface, and in particular all that regards the faerl in relation to her. I am doing a study in a type of faerl that Sshamath's libraries are sparse on."

"Of of of course Jabbress.. but you are not asking me to assist in anything untowards are you? I do not wish to be branded a herectic like your mother was for a time! I would not survive it!," pleads Adenith.

"No you will not be branded a heretic fool. I am no heretic. My mother has long since free'd herself of that title with the blood of many as you well know. Do not be spreading rumors about me, I will know where they started!," orders Nefara. Turning around Nefara the commoner of house Zau'Afin enters the compound.

No simple commoner is this. Daughter of a Dreadguard who served four Ilharesses of Zau'Afin and a former Quel'Saruk, this little spider is ready to drink the blood of her enemies.

Lolth's listens intently
Image

The fat one is sitting on his cushions when he see's Nefara leaving the compound to go on one of her expiditions into the gul caverns. Clearing his throat in her direction he picks up a small glass of port and begins to drink it. Nefara eyeing the fatling from the corner of her eye changes her direction and approaches him. As she approaches the fat one greets her, "Vendui Jabbress. I have some new wares from Eryndlyn. My contacts there have aquired many books of arcane knowledge from surfacerers along the sword coast. This book I believe is one that would interest you."

Handing the book over with a gloved hand Nefara notes that the book is unnaturally cool to the touch, with a single arcane blue glowing rune upon it.

Image

Taking the book with her bare hand Nefara sucks in her breath in dismay at her naivety as a flash of a vision intrudes on her mind. She see's an image of herself, armored in battle gear, with the cold swirling around her. She takes the book and places it in her pack for later study. Wide eyed with suprise she stares straight ahead.

"Are dos well Jabbress?," The fat one asks with a wry smile.

Nefara responds, "Dos did not tell me that the tome was warded fool!"

The fat one responds matter of factly, "I was not sure it was Jabbress. I was told not to touch it as only those worthy of its secrets should dare touch it. I did not ask what nonsense the cryptic warning meant as I have no interest in such faerl. But I knew you would pass such a test. Otherwise your failure to master this faerl would have reflected poorly on me. But now I know you will not only survive, but learn well this faerl."

Narrowing her eyes at the fat one's confidence, uncertain what it portends on the true nature of the fat one's power and place in the Qu'ellar, and her own destiny within the Qu'ellar, Nefara decides to nod quickly and takes out a sack of platnium to pay the fat one well for his work. However the fat one surprises her again by stating easily and even mildly charmingly, "No worries Nefara, your book has already been paid for by your keeper. However, I have been told to tell you that you better master this faerl well for you will be tested soon."

Blinking Nefara walks away to consider what was said, how it was said, and what tests await for her in the future. She is not sure of the identity of her "keeper" but realizes that is someone of influence or power. Moving into the tunnels she finds a secluded cavern and wards the entrance. Sitting down she begins to study the tome and mouths the words of the faerl.

With anger Nefara storms into the section of Sshamath where few travel, a place where wild spiders are found and where the Rothes and poorest commoners are found in hovels and abandoned buildings. Traveling down a dark location where all avoid except the spiders themselves, Nefara walks down to where she was raised, the home of her mother. She passes a dark cavern with a low tunnel at the far end which she has treaded before. Bending down she walks the winding paths of the low tunnel while spiders scurry past. The spiders themselves seem to acknowledge her as Nefara throws little morsels of food to them as she passes. This particular area was once used to store large Rothe, but after a collapse it was deemed unstable for use. A familiar large spider see's her and excitedly reaches out with it's forlegs to hug her right leg. Nefara pets the large spider and holds a large amount of food to it's mouth, which it eats greedily, then nibbles on her hand affectionately. As she does so a spider lands on her shoulder and nuzzles her neck. Nefara smiles at the appearance of her childhood pet spider. After bonding with the spiders Nefara walks past them into a small alcove of a cavern. After the collapse, the strong part of the cave was reinforced , so she was told as a youth. There is a bedroll on the ground and a small table and desk with some shelves. A bucket and a few barrrels of provisions are neatly stacked.

"Quzerrack ult Ulltellar!," speaks Nefara in a language not common to Sshamath. A thick door, perfectly hewn into the cavern wall pushes itself inward and to the side, allowing her to enter the home of her mother. Inside is a chamber, about twenty foot by ten feet. Along the wall on the left are pegs and stands for different Piwafwi's, armors, shields, and weapons. All bear the marks of Qu'ellar Zau'Afin. To the right are stacked crates and barrels filled with high quality goods. The room is cool and roots tangle from the ceiling. Nefara is awaire the unwanted guests will be held fast by the roots. A magical purple light glows from arcane markings on the walls. The home was crafted by Snirvneblin at high cost and empowered by powerful faerl. Having advanced in her studies in the faerl Nefara begins to understand their complexity and power, and that her mother obviously went to great cost to create a home for herself and Nefara that was powerfully warded from scrying, teleportation, and attack. At the end of the room is an wood wall that meshes perfectly with the stone, as it it has grown in place on the wall. The wall has arms and hands and a large face however that become visible as Nefara approaches, but were previously hidden. As Nefara approaches the wood wall it speaks to Nefara in drow and states, "Welcome little spider. Your mother has been alerted of your presence and is looking forward to the meeting. The door moves aside and Nefara passes. The door then settles again into place but no longer has the appearance of a door from the other side, , but of a large trunk of a tree. Within is a large chamber which once inside it reveals that the actual door is a large tree like creature that was one of Nefara's childhood companions who taught her about the underwilds and the dangers it hides.

Image

Within the room is a large cavern at least 100 feet high at the highest and a round chamber several hundred feet in diameter. In the center levitates a magical orb that casts a powerful bright light into the cavern, mirroring the light of the surface. A small stream falls down from the south as a waterfall and creates a pool in the center of the chamber with the water disapearing into the stone of the floor. Small cave entrances off the side walls make way to small rooms that Nefara knows are comfortable and roomy as well as furnished. Nefara never understood why her mother went to such expense to create this small, safe, and warm and beautiful environment, as it has no place in Sshamath. Considering it size and number of rooms, it has strangley never been visited by anyone that she could recall.

Image

This is the place Nefara was raised amongst strange creatures that she later learned do not typically live in the underdark, or that do and have been tamed by her mother, such as the displacer beast pups that her mother took and and trained as pets, and the spiders her mother likewise trained as guards. The pond in the center of the cavern is stocked with fish that are good for eating.

"Mother, Tannarr has said you are home and expecting me. Show yourself!," speaks out Nefara in frustration, knowing that her mother is watching her and likely nearby, but undetectable.

"Vendui daughter. It has been a very long time since you have visted me and your home," speaks a full, beautiful, and feminine voice off to Nefera's right. Emerging from the shadows and colors of the wall the form of a female drow takes shape and walks towards Nefara.

In response to the warm welcome Nefara retorts accusingly, "Mother did you send that surfacer to show me the way to the surface!?"

Blinking and without hesitation Dilarra states, "No I did not. What surfacerer?"

"Come now mother. A Bae'queshell female who calls herself Juliette and claims to be devotee of Auril! What do you take me for mother!," retorts Nefara with venom.

Image

"A servant of Auril? Tell me more daughter," questions Dilarra evenly.

"Xas, a human female. She has the appearance of a blackguard of the ice goddess. You claim to have no knowledge of this?," asks Nefara with a lower tone, realizing that her mother is not lying.

"Nau daughter. I have not, but this is interesting news. I will have to search this human female out to make sure she is trustworthy. Describe her for me," states Dilarra with maternal patience. Nefara goes on to describe the voice, physical appearance, and equipment of Juliette in detail while Dilarra soaks in the information. At the end of the description Dilarra lets out a long sigh.

"I see now that my past will not be easily escaped, nor will it avoid casting it's shadow upon you daughter. Continue to lie about me to the others, however it is time to tell you about my life, so that you will have no surprises," states Dilarra calmly waiting for her daughter to register the gravity of her statement. While Nefara says nothing she observes her mother coolly and dispassionately and follows her to the pond at the center of the cavern where the two sit. Dilarra's hand trailing in the clean cool water as she speaks.

"I began my service to our people as a scout. I scouted out tunnels for caravans and merchants. It was in a cavern not much bigger then this one that I found a place that quickly filled with our people. I was one of the first to find it and so I was more familiar with the tunnels then most, a familiarity that saved my life on more then one occasion. What I am telling you is no excageration and truly happened, as impossible as it may sound," says Dilarra eyeing her daughter with concern and affection.

"On the surface was the shadowdale. Below that there were caverns that led to our place where two rival drow houses vied for power and control. Qu'ellar Dabel'kith and Qu'ellar Zau'Afin. I would often lead war bands into the tunnels and one cycle I was leading a group made up of a Bae'Queshell named NIl'Kah, a young Yath'Abban whose name is not important, and a few jaluken sarglitins. Although I was most familiar with the tunnels the inexperienced Yath'abban led us twice against my advice to dangerous places in the tunnels leading to the wasteful deaths of several of the sarglitins. I grew impatient. Finally the foolish Yath'abban got herself killed. I refused to bring the group back and suggested it would be better for Lolth to have the incompetent Yath'abban, but Nil'kah disagreed and brought the Yath'Abban back to the temple were the Yath'tallar brought her back to life," pausing Dilarra takes a sip of water with her hand.

"Yes mother I know this part of the story. She returned alive and accused you to be a herectic and told the temple priestesses you were so. And you had to hide in the tunnels for many cycles avoiding hunting parties in doing so. But you never did tell me how you rose to become the Dread'Guard of Zau'Afin?," asks Nefara.

Smiling at the memory Dilarra continues the tale, "Daughter I either evaded or eradicated the parties they sent to me. Ilharess Eloril herself found me three times and fought with me, and was soundly defeated each time. The last time I led a surfacer party of elves that were hunting me into the underdark, and led them to a hunting party led by Ilharess Eloril, and escaped into the tunnels and watched the two parties fight. Eventually I even drew Ilharess Eloril and Ilharess Lichi'Dichi out of the cavern they lived in with a few of their sarglitins and rothes, by sending Izz'orgoll in to insult them. In a rage they followed him out of the cavern into the tunnels where I was prepared and ready, and before the warriors and rothes of both houses, defeated both Ilharess Eloril and Ilharess Lichidichi in battle," tells Dilarra without emblishment. Pausing for a moment she watches her daughter as she listens in disbelief.

"Xas, I defeated them soundly. And I departed into the tunnels with Izz'orgoll. It was some time later that Ilharess Eloril had tracked me down in the tunnels, I believe with the help of her mother Yath'tallar Eclav. She found me and made me a bargain. If I faithfully served Eloril as her dreadguard, or bodyguard, she would have my title of heretic expunged from the temple. Ever since that time I was no longer the heretic Dilarra, but Dreadguard Dilarra, and I do not excagerate when I tell you that I was feared by all," says Dilarra chuckling.

"I have served four Ilharesses in my time but only two demanded I take the vow of service to them. Eloril and later the second Ilharess NIl'Kah. After Nil'kah I remaned in the Qu'ellar to serve Ilharess Ginthrae and finally Ilharess Moridin. As you know however the Qu'ellar is in decline and I have retreated to this place, where I raised you, my daughter," says Dilarra caressing the face of her daughter.

Wincing at the affection Nefara asks, "How does these things become a danger to me mother?"

"Because daughter I was never trusted. The title of heretic never fully left me. Also, if they knew you were my daughter that distrust and suspicion would fall to you. And truly daughter, any harm to you would be met by my battleaxe swiftly and without reservation. You could neither ascend the ladder of power of Zau'afin with my history to taint you, or the fear of my power. It is your power that your Qu'ellar must come to fear and respect. They must not doubt that you serve Lolth, as I know you do. But I have become a type of test for Loth's faithful. I have spilled more drow blood then any that I know of. I am tired of it to be honest. I live now only to keep you safe," states Dilarra matter of factly thinking to herself ruefully that she is now the dreadguard of her daughter.

"I thought I felt your eyes in the tunnels mother. I understand now why you raised me as you did. But why did you love me mother? That is not the drow way," asks Nefara.

"All mother's love their children Nefarra, though some may fane not to. They only place service to Lolth above all else, whether out of fear or out of total submission to the Goddess. I place you before all that. If the Qu'ellar knew that, they would use this agaisnt me to control me, and it would in the end spell their doom, as they would disappear in the tunnels never to be found again. I do not wish to see Zau'Afin weakened, but strengthened. Yath'Tallar Eclav told me once that when the new city was found, Maerimydra, that I would die by her hand. She was never able to complete this threat as her madness took her over and she wandered the underdark tunnels lost in time, her cackle the only thing heard from on occasion. I have lived through more threats and Ilharesses then I care to remember. So will you if you prove victorious, clever, and capable. But remember only this daughter. I survived only because I chose the time and place of my battles. Without that advantage even I could be and was bested by the treachery of our people. I am the only drow you know in Sshamath that loves you and will always act for your safety and benefit. I did not send this Juliette. But I will find out more about her and if she is a threat, I will eliminate her. If she threatens your place in Zau'Afin, I will eliminate her. If she proves an allie, she will be made to understand, that she will keep your best interests close to her heart, or I will take her heart from her, "speaks Dilarra with love in her eyes for her daughter.

Eyeing her mother in disbelief but knowing her mother never to lie Nefara follows her mother to their kitchen where a plump female snirvneblin serves a delicious family meal. Afterwards Nefara leaves her mothers keeping and returns to Sshamath to run some errands and afterwards perform some tasks at the academy. All the while to the unseen eyes of all, a lithe female drowess, wearing mithril scale and the emblem of Zau'Afin and the markings of a Dreadguard, stalks her daughter protectively.

Struggling with her faith in Lolth, Nefara ponders on the generosity shown to her by her mother and by Zymorian Auvryath, patron of a heretical Qu'ellar that follows Vhaeraun.

Nefara has a personal hatred for Dragons due to their power and their intimidating stature. Nefara has sworn to become strong enough to destroy Dragons by herself one day. How is it that a half-dragon of Vhaerun should prove an allie this cycle? How did the help of a Vhaeraunite to her mother ensure her place in Zau'Afin, alowing her survival to give birth to herself. These conclusions are impossible to ignore. Are the Yath'abbans spinning lies and folk tales to excuse their sadistic treatment of the drow people? Is friendship even possible in the Underdark? Is bleeding with another truly a way to earn trust and friendship? Is that better then power?

Nefara walks Sshamath a lost soul. Vulnerable. Unballanced. Unsure.
