The DM Screen

Unread post by DM SummerBreeze »

Hey Everyone ! I wanted to make a post here about my side-project, the DM Screen. It is a place for participating DM's and players to bridge communication !

I realize so far this has mostly spread by word of mouth, but it has become a rather popular place, with several DM's now participating as well as a large amount of players.

We do need to make some things clear though:

Regular requests and rulings are all done through the forums and PM's into the DM team as a whole. DM's cannot make official rulings or take on official requests through this channel. Discord is not "officially supported" by Admins/HDM's. Participation in the DM screen, is an opt-in system, meaning it is in no way shape or form mandatory to communicate with DM's in any fashion through this channel. Participation by DM's and players is entirely voluntary!

What is this server for?

It is to help with communicating not only with participating DM's but also with your fellow faction members and players in relation to RP and events.. DM's can see discussions that all factions here are having, players can ping DM's and ask basic questions or speak with each other, a place to get to know some of the DM's a bit better even as people. This is pushed as a safe space for everyone involved, it is not a private discord, and any players, regardless of faction are welcome to participate or have their faction join. Perhaps you don't want to bother creating your own faction discord? This could be a healthy alternative for you as well, as only faction members and DM's can see the faction specific channels.

For DM's, the idea is to allow them to communicate easier with players for when/where they can meet up for scheduled events, real time event chat if something goes wrong (Like a crash or issue.) for players to openly talk about events and RP in a way that is easily and quickly visible by not just themselves and their factions but also participating DM's.

I want to make clear that this is something I have taken on personally as I believe it will help foster a more transparent relationship between players and the DM's that wish to participate. But it is our responsibility as a community to make initiatives like this work, it will not be an accepted forum for airing grievances against DM's or each other, and this will be strictly enforced by myself, other DM's, and staff members here at BGTSCC. <3 Thank you all for participating, and I welcome any and all feedback and suggestions on this initiative.

This is an awesome attitude and idea. But I have to ask: why can't this be done on this Forum?

It is, to an extent. The Discord is just more comfortable to some, and makes responding and discussing more "Real time" than the forums are. The screen has far more uses as a DM tool for organizing things than anything else. ;) for me, it's also to combat the idea of "club housing" a bit as well, its really all about transparency on both ends. Really, it's been going well so far, and we will see how it continues to grow in the future, and perhaps it will spurn more initiatives here on the forums or more "officially sanctioned" moves toward more transparency and support in general.

I don't aim to berate the idea, and perhaps I'm mistaken here, but I read the implication that the Forum lacks transparency. If true, shouldn't we all, players and DMs, work to change that here, first?

As a last note, since I do not wish to spark the ire of the DM Team any more than I already have or do, I personally think dividing the attention of the community is a bad thing. And if the DM Screen is not official BGTSCC, then how can it be relied on? To me, it means that one group will focus on the immediacy of DM attention on the Screen, while others get lost in/on what is officially supported, where to go for help, etc.

And with Boo's initiative to have players join in Forum supporting roles, I cannot help but see a competition for attention, and a place, where good and straight attention can be placed.

That said, I'm all for the impetus stated in the OP. I just wish that the multiple formats could come together, and by working on one project, in one place, things can actually happen. Officially!

Cheers.

That sort of implies that DM's participating in one wont participate in the other, which isn't true. We all have to participate here on the forums, its part of the role. This is simply another avenue, and allows some of us to be able to speak directly with players, and vice versa, in real time. Something that is simply not possible on the forums. We already have around 100 players and several DM's participating in the screen as it stands now, and so far it's been nothing but a positive experience for myself. It also lets players poke those of us hanging around in the screen if something comes up in game that might need immediate attention and one of us is available, or quick questions about events, organizing times when players and factions can get together in real time. If I crash during an event, and I ping the event's channel in real time to let players know. I can post links to the various rumours/threads popping up about an event in one place in real time. Allows a player to poke a DM in real time to remind them, or ask something simple, or even just to have open discussions about whatever in a safe place with DM's. All manner of uses for us. :D

The forum "lackng transparency" is not the implication I am trying to put here, and would be an entire other discussion that wouldn't be appropriate for this particular thread or initiative.

I love the DM screen discord. It allows for near instantaneous answers to questions, etc. It has helped with planning the times for events, too. Real time responses is so much better than forum PMs. I rarely post in the discord there, but I read it a lot.

the statement that struck home with me, in the OP, "a place to get to know some of the DMs a bit better even as people"

this is a good thing

one of the primary causes of misunderstandings and negative behavior is not knowing or understanding the person on the other side of the computer screen

we too often overlook the importance of ooc communication. it not only avoids what i posted above, but it is also how you make online friends

something i've brought up before, is that the current server climate, frowns a bit too much on ooc chat in spatial. yes, we are a RP server, but we're also a community, sharing in a group story-telling experience. also, one of the most fun things about PnP D&D, one of the core joys of the D&D experience, is the fun ooc jokes and chat, that goes on alongside the fun IC shenanigans

Thank you for the response. What was missing from the OP, for me, was a clear mention that the DM Screen is totally OOC. Cheers.
