Re: Greetings from a new player
Welcome to the game and the server!
We are a roleplaying server, so you will want to consider your character's background and how their character build and alignment and everything else fit into how you want to try to play them.
There's admittedly lots to learn, but don't sweat it at the beginning. Ask folks if you have questions -- everyone's super helpful here.
As a level 1 character, you may want to get a Backpack of the Hearty (+HP) ASAP to make the lower levels a bit easier to get through, and while in many games potions are ignored until they stack up to 99 items in your inventory slot, potions and other consumables are very powerful here, so don't be afraid to invest in mage armor or barkskin potions and the like to increase your survivability while you're exploring and leveling up! It's always easier with a party, too, so don't be shy about teaming up with other players when you encounter them in dungeons and other maps!

It depends on who you ask, and your definition of "high".. but yes we are a roleplay server and expect interaction to be IC. We aren't hardcore or anything, but we keep OOC chatter to a minimum or in tells, and generally have a rich history of storytelling and IC motivations for our characters.
I feel bad linking up rules when you first join, but I would be remiss in not pointing them out. Reading them may save you some hassles as you start!

30 lvl cap
Personal experience is that the first few levels can be rough (especially if you are new and feeling your way around) but level 5-20 go real fast. After 20 and until 30 things slow down.
We do have RP XP that flows pretty well if you interact with folks, so there is always that to help.
Its really hard to judge our difficulty level. We hope you'll tell us!

Welcome!
If you do not already know about it, the www.NWN2DB.com site is a great tool for building. It isn’t tailored specifically for BGTSCC, but you can share your build on the appropriate thread on these forums, and get feedback.

Re: Greetings from a new player
Playing a mage for the first time is probably the most painful experience. I also did it! Terrible.Darksylum wrote: ↑Fri Jul 02, 2021 1:49 pm Just my 2 thoughts here. This server is probably the hardest I have ever played on at the start. I have roamed around just about every zone I can get to. I have tried fighting bandits, rats, skeletons. I have been inside the sewers, graveyard, bandit cave, etc. The result is 0 XP and constant death.
Maybe this PW is just not very magic user friendly starting out. I may roll a melee class and see if I have better results. But as it stands. I have no idea how any level 1 mage can get started here.
But, you CAN do it. First thing is complete all the Quests inside the city of Baldur's Gate. That is a way to learn the city, plus it'll get your mage to Lvl 2 easy. Quests outside Baldur's Gate, though you may find them, are probably way too hard until lvl 5 or so (though more experience BGTSCC players can get them completed through secret tactics!). Once lvl 2, being a squishy mage, find a fighter or a small group, and grind out the northern farmlands, the bandit cave (There is also a quest for there!), or the graveyard. You, as a mage, just get a crossbow and pew pew from a distance, while the real fighters kill everything and your PC will be granted XP plenty. Soon, your PC is lvl 4-5. Move on down the Tradeway, south, after that (but as you go, and as you lean more as a player, you'll definitely want to stay in a group, with a fighter in front!). Cheers.

Re: Greetings from a new player
When I first started the server someone gave me a few pieces of equipment (RP'd of course) that made all the difference. I would be more than happy to pay it forward and help you get a solid start... nothing extreme, just a few pieces of kit with the RP to suit the purpose.Darksylum wrote: ↑Fri Jul 02, 2021 1:49 pm Just my 2 thoughts here. Re: Greetings from a new player
Yeah, you know I was going to mention that when you asked "how hard is it". Playing a mage is definitely hard-mode at low levels. It gets better as you level, and then (if you are good with the mechanics, I'm not the best myself) you're a monster later on.
Solid advice in this thread so far.
1) Do the quests in the city. There are a few that aren't even combat related and will get you some momentum.
2) Find other players. Both to RP with (for the RP script and to learn about things IC), as well as to party with. As Steve mentioned, as a low level mage you aren't going to roll solo very easily (if at all). You'll want to bring along some front line folks, with you in the back reserving your magic and telling them how intelligent you are while they do your bidding.
3) Don't forget consumables. Potions and scrolls at low level are incredibly powerful. A summon scroll lasts a good long while and is decent against low level content, and there is a good mix of defensive choices as well.
I promise it gets less frustrating as you go. Finding folks to RP with makes all the difference. If you struggle to do that, hit up the discord or share your times here and I am certain someone will help you out a bit. One further note to keep in mind, if you are playing an evil mage/necromancer type.. that's a doubly difficult path as it carries not only the mechanical difficulty but the RP difficulty as well (unless you find some sketchy friends). If you are going that route (and your signature makes me wonder, lol), once you get up a bit in levels you'll want to go looking for friends up near Soubar. Plenty of friendly faces to help take you in and show you the ropes on the dark side of life in BG.
Good luck. Don't give up and keep us updated.

I know I found the Warehouse at the harbor at Baldurs Gate was the only spot I could survive till farming to level 2-3Darksylum wrote: ↑Fri Jul 02, 2021 1:49 pm Just my 2 thoughts here. Rats there are much easier than the rats in the Sewers
But yeah casters are tough, especially if you don't make use of Defensive Casting & have the Concentration to succeed, there is cheap gear in the 'bazaar' at the NPC in the back. He has almost gear for almost every slot that grants +5 health that stack

Re: Greetings from a new player
There is a shop in the east gate district of Baldur's Gate that sells very inexpensive gear that is wearable by a level 1 character that adds +5 HP per item. You can end up with about 40-50 HP at level 1 and that will be a large help surviving some things!Darksylum wrote: ↑Fri Jul 02, 2021 1:49 pm Just my 2 thoughts here. Casters are a lot of fun to roleplay on the server (I can't help but play them) and give you a lot of roleplay opportunities, but they are tricky at lower levels. Aside from the quest advice offered here, it's helpful to pair up with some others - in the 'player scry' you can put your status as 'Looking for Group' which will help you out there.
I'll keep an eye out for you in-game; like a few people in this thread, I was also gifted some good gear when starting out and am happy to pay that kindness forward to new players
