Druid using mithral chain shirt

Unread post by shattered »

Hello everyone.
Could someone explain to me, what has happened to a level 7 druid, that had no issues casting spells while wearing mithral chainshirt?
I haven't played her for about a week and today first I saw while casting, that "She has broken her oath to nature and there is no power behind her spells, because she can't wear metall made armors and shields"? Why was it not braking any oaths before? Does it depend on Deity choice?
And what armor should a druid wear, taking to attention that he's allowed to wear medium armor?
Thanks in advance.

But if we don them, do we not become them?"

DM Ink and Rhifox wrote: The Druid armor change is live. If you are currently wearing metal armor and try to cast - it will cause your character to be unable to cast for 24 (real) hours. To avoid any unnecessary trouble, switch to a non-metal armor.

This change was not announced with the patch notes as the function was already supposed to be in years ago. It was broken, though, and a different change made for the warlock update ended up fixing it which is why it's suddenly working.
Copied from the Discord.
-------------------
Druids are proficient with light and medium armor but are prohibited from wearing metal armor; thus, they may wear only padded, leather, or hide armor. (A druid may also wear wooden armor that has been altered by the ironwood spell so that it functions as though it were steel. See the ironwood spell description) Druids are proficient with shields (except tower shields) but must use only wooden ones.

A druid who wears prohibited armor or carries a prohibited shield is unable to cast druid spells or use any of her supernatural or spell-like class abilities while doing so and for 24 hours thereafter.
Copied from the SRD
-------------------
You should be able to wear any armor that is non-metal, and shields that are non-metal.
so iron/mithril/Ada/darksteel are right out, dragonhide/umber-hulk/leather/wood, etc. should be fine.
When in doubt, check the material on the item. If you don't see a material, it's probably the 'default' for the item.
You can *wear* fullplate if you have the proficiency feat for it, but keep in mind you will probably want Dragonhide armor or something

This function was coded years ago but it was missing a } that caused the script not to function. We were not aware of this as it was never bug reported. While updating the script this function is in for one of the warlock changes, the druid function was fixed as well.

It currently does not depend on deity choice, but in the next patch Mielikki will allow metal armor (as she allows her druids to wear metal armor in lore). All other druid deities do not allow metal armor.

I apologize for the inconvenience.

That rule was/is still nowhere on the forum/wiki for years now!

So why do we "few unknowing" players not get a free RCR for our crippled builds, now that this super important rule and its cheesy exception is working. :?

It is nice to point out at core DnD rules, but... we play NWN2, not DnD. :o
1. NWN2 wood armor - what is it? Is it BGTSCC custom type of armor? How or where it could be obtained?
2. Is it possible to buy dragonhide/umber-hulk/wyvern hide armor (breastplate or fullplate) on BGTSCC? Where? Cause I am sure there is no way to craft it on BGTSCC.
It seems everyone druids stuck to studded leather armor now and to Mielikki after next patch release.

I pointed out the SRD rules for the source that I understand to be the cited rules by which the implementation was based off.

As for non-metal armors, it is effectively a design decision from the Dev standpoint - they can include a material property if they so choose. I know Dragonhide armor gets sold to Blunt on a not-infrequent basis, and in theory a item developer could choose to make Duskwood or Ironwood properties on armor - thereby declaring them as "not metal".

It is also my understanding that the devs have not had sufficient notice yet to sort through all the item blueprints and correct armor materials in light of the fix, as the fact it was broken (and thus the requisite for specifically nonmetal armor properties) was not developer knowledge per Rhifox's comments. It would probably be a reasonable approach to start a suggestions thread for armors that might need material review, or to work with the team to get more options for nonmetal armors into circulation.

I mean, this is NwN2 but this is D&D. It's forgotten realms and its lore. Druids (that arent mielikkians) do not wear metal armor.

Personally, my char has been wearing Bearskin Armor that is made of mithril, but I've reskinned it to hides and leathers. Now I just have to abide by a lore rule also mechanically, and as a druid player, I'm very much okay with that.

But, if there is one thing that is lacking, it's the options. Kitsune is probably very right that it's not like this was planned, as it was broken and got unknowingly fixed, so proper time to add other options for druids wasnt really a thing.

However, though we can't craft yet, I'm sure a DM request to make or change an armor's material through RP is possible.
Also, I've heard there is dragonhide armor available somewhere, though I'm unsure where.
And finally, we're druids, our armor AC that isnt the +4 magical part doesn't even translate into wildshaping. So balancewise little changes except for the few niche builds, which do get unfairly hit by the lack of options

But it might be nice to add Ironwood as a spell and some more armor options that arent metal, because even if theres somewhere to buy dragonhide, it's surely not enough

Edit: Also, must add, shields are VERY MUCH lacking! I also have worn a metal one that I reskinned to be animal carapace, but now that doesnt work, and I do lack other options.

Yeah an unfortunate consequence of the mechanical enforcement never being properly implemented (and simply assumed to be) is that the glaring holes in available equipment and support went unnoticed.

No doubt that additional material options will be made available to rectify this now that the need is definitely known.

Probably better to make some suggestions for expanding support for different material types, since the change isn't going to be reverted, nor should it be.

Coming soon. Along with some more that I haven't done yet.

A Bearskin and Tigerskin equivalent that druids can use will be added to the epic store. The rest of these will be new base armor types for the loot table (with possibly a handful of loot options in various stores).

Oh, and BTW, it seems impossible to change the Deity over the Nexus. Trying to do so, leads to only dialogue:
-Choose the deity you wish to serve.
-Nevermind. (the only option given).

Can't change if you're a divine class, since your char shouldnt be changing willy nilly if you get your spells from a god.

Also, TY rhifox! Youre legit amazing

With a druid spell like Ironwood that functions like Magic Vestment, that would take some of the sting off for sure. It would be cool if clubs and wooden weapons could be hardened up with an Ironwood spell as well, everything not metal. Clerics can wear enchanted armor, and there is lots of enchanted armor around, so they need those spells less as it is. Druids like all casters need items that add spells, not bracers of armor. Druid armor is hard enough to find, let alone enchanted armor.

Wouldn't that just be Barkskin or Tortoiseshell?
Once Rhifox's new armor types go in, there might be merit to Ironwood converting the statblock of an item to it's metal equivilent (with the detriments and penalties, but as nonmetal). But I do not think providing Druids access to an Armor/Shield Enhancement Bonus is the correct course.

Ironwood, if it gets added, might be a component of crafting instead. Or else build entirely new pieces of gear in the same way as enchanted weapon spells, rather than buffing an existing piece of gear.

However, there are many non-metal new armor types coming, including Bronzewood, Wildwood, Leafweave, Darkleaf, Duskwood, Ankheg, Chitin, Wood, Bone, and Shell. Shields are also going to default as wood instead of metal.
