Adding Some Life to NPC's

Unread post by selhan »

Hi BGTSCC,
I want to add more bit of life to some of the NPC's on the server by given them some random oneliners. I'v done so with some public areas already but not much since it was a newly thing I was taught and theres a lot of maps.

But I want to ask what other areas could use some that dont have any. I willing to add some to following areas, and maybe even give them a better appearance..

Taverns/ Inn's
Temples/Shops
Faction/Guild Halls ((In regards to this, please send me via Private PM of which NPC's and what you would like them to randomly say or Emote))

Its something I'm willing to work on in-between my larger projects, so please dont expect them all to be done over night

While that can be cool, there are some who find it distracting, so be careful with it. Especially with the weird bug that multiplies NPCs outside of the temple of Ilmater, I've seen people complain that the NPCs talk way too much and just disrupt RP happening there.

And why is the cat licking off its fur? That is brutal.

Because I corrected it something like 3 times and the blueprint never updated. Like any work with the toolset, it takes a certain amount of time to be done and the toolset being what it is, it erases your work at whim.

My suggestion would be to remove those non player characters entirely. It could have been a great addition, yet it does not work on our server and disrupts roleplay.

The simplest way to do it would be to remove the spawner script related to Baldur's Gate districts areas.
I would advise against having use of this script in interior. The script is made to generate sometimes a random message when a character meets you. Yet when there are multiple characters, it multiplies the chance to generate a message, sometimes resulting in generating a flow of countless messages that makes it hard to understand what is happening anymore.

Removing them is for me the best solution. But my input is not really valuable.

Cheers,

No, no. I think NPCs walking about is good. In fact I'm not actually against the one-liners either. But they are sometimes a bit too frequent (I think the script currently is based on how many players are nearby somehow?).

I apologise if I sounded like completely negative about the whole idea. That wasn't my intention. I think it's definitely worth having, but some adjustments may be needed scriptwise.

Yeah, maybe less emotes for rats and cats and the like, it gets a bit spammy in certain areas. But I do like the ones for citizens and random humanoids.

The S'shamath bazaar could use some life to it. All these vendors standing around not saying anything. Probably the Darkwoods as well with a more threatening vibe to it.

Darkwood I can do, The bazaar I can only attempt, some reason everytime I try to open that map my toolset crashes. I been wanting to alter some of that long ago but couldn't. Mist Lake I did manage to do

I love your alterations to Mist Lake. Really, whatever you can do to bring life to the place is appreciated, bazaar or no.

Thanks!

Sometimes the random NPC speech has been really lovely and immersive. e.g., Vhaan and Ashenie were walking towards the Shrine and an old citizen said to them "Today is the first day of the rest of your life. So live it well." - which is an important Ilmatari saying. It then felt very realistic for both of them to reply with an emote or blessing, and it added a lot of 'life' to the short journey to the temple.

I think some more NPCs in the Wide would be great to create more of a market 'atmosphere'. I understand it can be disruptive to RP - but imo city streets in some areas should feel disruptive during the day.
