Scarlet Silbey

Unread post by metaquad4 »

### Profile ###
Full Name: Scarlet Silbey (formerly Scarlet Duskseer).
Age: Twenty-four years old.
Race & Ancestor: Tiefling (Lilitu).
Hidden: show
Scarlet is a sire of abyssal evil, born of ancestors that once mated with a powerful Lilitu. Her ancestor, Gapbgooget ("Temptation" in abyssal), may or may not be interested in her existence. Scarlet herself does not know what she is born from, though she did once read that those bearing her old family name ("Duskseer") once mated with either a Succubus or a Lilitu, so she has her own suspicions that it might be the case.

Being a tiefling has helped inform Scarlet's evil alignment, as well as her more cynical world-view. She finds it easy to prey on others, and easier still to believe that everyone in the world is also out to do the same. She trusts other tieflings to only commit evil, which means that she treads carefully around them but also believes that most of them are "birds of a feather" to her. She has not met many aasimar, but is likely to see the celestial-born creatures with a level of instinctual distrust, fear, or hate.
Sex: Female.
Date of Birth: 1 Uktar, 1336.
Place of Birth: A Shack, Darkwoods, Sshamath.
Hidden: show
A place of suffering and woe, the forgotten ghetto of the City of Dark Weavings. Scarlet was unfortunate enough to be born to a human father and a tiefling mother. She struggled and scraped by, doing whatever she had to in order to survive the cruel world of underdark living.
Alignment: Neutral Evil.
Hidden: show
Scarlet is neutral evil. She will not always actively seek to further either tyrants or anarchists, rather she is evil in the means to her ends. She does not care about ethics or morality, she will do whatever she must to secure whatever end goal she has in mind.

Naturally, this mentality has led her to pursue a great amount of evil magic and it has also attracted evil spirits who try to influence her in exchange for power. Overtime, this has encouraged her (via the inherent corruption of the environment she has created for herself) towards more evil ends and not just evil means.

As a Shaman, she is also a priestess of Talona. While more indirect of a divine connection than a proper cleric, her spirit guide does whisper whims from Talona to her - often times this means she is encourages to nurture, guide, and protect spirits of plague, disease, and corruption. This kind of service shifts her alignment towards evil as well.
Patron Deity: Talona, the Plague Crone via ""Whispering Pox".
Hidden: show
Talona's whim is carried out indirectly, via Scarlet's spirit guide. The spirit guide ("Whispering Pox") is a worshipper of Talona, an aspect of plague, hunger, and terror. Its purpose is to spread these things and while it personally spread disease before its contact with Scarlet, the way it does this now is by using Scarlet as a vessel to nurture, bond with, and protect the spirits of disease and sickness.
Profession: Scholar, Mage, Spirit Seeker.
Hidden: show
Scarlet is both a scholar and a mage; the interest that really drives her pursuit of power is her pursuit of knowledge. Finding new ways to use the arcane, even if it means diving into mundane books to lay the ground-work for her research, is always of interest to her. Along the way, she has dabbled in many different professions - not mastering them, but learning as a neophyte to further herself.
Classes: Wizard (initial), Spirit Shaman (at 2), Mystic Theurge, Blood Magus.
Hidden: show
Wizard: Scarlet is a learned arcanist, a wizard. Growing up in Sshamath, this is a path towards salvation and some small amount of legal protection for any non-drow. She was lucky enough to be a natural prodigy, learning her first cantrip from a very early age. She is enthralled by magic and absolutely adores to learn every faucet of it she can.

Spirit Shaman: Scarlet came into contact with spirits very early on. The petrified forest of the Darkwoods is not a kind place; it is a vile part of Sshamath that is more akin to Soubar - a place of suffering and predation. Spirits of woe, sickness, and evil collect and fester in it, given the sordid environment.

Scarlet's first encounter with a spirit was when she was very young, when she managed to perceive a weak spirit in service to Talona. At the time, it was latched onto a resident vagrant. She would often dream of it, encouraging its nature and offering it praise for its beauty. The more she gave it words of kindness, the weaker and sicker the vagrant became. Eventually, the vagrant died of sickness and the spirit came to Scarlet. It offered the then-girl a deal: a benign possession with it as her guide. Power and knowledge, in exchange for her doing what she did for it, to other spirits of its kind. Scarlet naturally accepted, sinking into the spirit world alongside it.

Her guide's name is "Whispering Pox". It is a spirit of hunger, disease, and terror.

Mystic Theurge: With both wizardry and shamanism as cornerstones to her understanding of the world, it was only natural the two would weave seamlessly at some point. Scarlet, after reading much of how magic was made of up both the weave and the power, decided to try to find a way to make the two work together harmoniously.

Her guide was more than happy to facilitate this, merging into Scarlet's whole and accessing her wealth of arcane knowledge for its own ends.

Blood Magus: As a shaman, Scarlet has dabbled in blood magic. Scarlet has found this power flows naturally to her; while the depraved injuries do hurt her, they hurt others even more. And the ends, justify the means. She once self-stylized as an "arch-blood-mage" due to her mastery in all spell-forms of blood magic, though she lacks the ability to produce more advanced forms of blood magic such as teleportation or awakening blood.
Languages: Scarlet's general theme is that she will pick up new languages for research and study. She feels the best way to figure something out is to go straight for the source, rather than trying to muddle through second hand and translated accounts.
Hidden: show
Magical Languages: These are languages Scarlet has picked up in the pursuit of magical power, each one offering her the chance to incant spells in a different way and to read various magical tomes - as well as to communicate with magical beings.
-- Dragonic, for general purpose magical study.
-- Abyssal and Infernal, for studying evil magic and deities.
-- Celestial, for studying holy manuscripts and to bend goodly magic to her whim.
-- Sylvan, for peering into the illusory tricks that the fey are often known for and to study the spirits of the wild.
-- Aquan, Ignan, Terran, and Auran; the four elemental languages allow her an intimacy with elemental magic, as well as the ability to better commune with elemental spirits.

Regional and Racial Languages: These are languages Scarlet picked up in the pursuit of studying culture and faith.
-- Undercommon and Common; both trade languages in order to communicate with the denizens of the world.
-- Mulhorandi, to study the holy scriptures of the Imaskari's ex-slaves to better understand their unique pantheon.
-- Drow, which was spoken often in Sshamath where she grew up. She learned by self-study and mimicry, as well as some limited peaceful contact with her drow "peers".
-- Dwarvish, which she speaks often with a duergar twist due to limited contact with surface dwarves. She learned this to better trade with the tireless forgers and makers.
-- Jotun, to study giant philosophy in an effort to see if their people had devised any unique forms of magic or war.
-- Elven, in order to read of the Seldarine and the elven way of life.
-- Loross, to study the ancient Netherese after being enraptured by the cautionary tale of Karsus' Avatar. She hopes to put it to use if she ever stumbles upon the rumoured ancient ruins connecting the Sword Coast to the areas around Sshamath or, better yet, a Nether Scroll.

Miscellaneous:
-- Animal. Less of a language and more a way to interpret body language, Scarlet picked this up naturally after trying to communicate with animal spirits in the wild.
Physical Description: Beautiful, Willowy, Otherworldly.
Hidden: show
Scarlet, perhaps owing to her Lilitu blood and her own dedication to personal fitness as a way to obtain mundane power, is ostensibly a beautiful woman. With raven-black hair, soft pale skin, and that shapely figure; she is a generally pleasant sight. That said, there is something not quite right about her. The way her violet-red eyes shimmer with a predatory, hungry gaze. Her lips, black as the darkest night. Her teeth, each one a pointed canine. Her eyes, which pleasant expressions rarely ever even reach. She has an otherworldly aura to her physique, something that might make common and less learned (and indeed, the learned who know her nature) people a bit more nervous around her.
Psychological Description: Lively, Curious, Sadistic.
Hidden: show
The ends justify the means. But, we should also enjoy our work and the world we find ourselves in. That is how Scarlet sees things. She commits evil, and she enjoys it when she does it. Even the act of casting an entomb spell and watching the life ebb out of her target is amusing to her. Sometimes she will sit and watch it happen, sometimes she creates poetry when the suffering of others acts as a muse for her whims. She is absolutely a cruel person, though she is not a rabid dog. She knows when to act "sane" and when it is safe to let the mask slip.

She is also a generally lively figure. Part of it is the vigour of relative youth, and part of it is her bloodline's natural tendency towards acts involving the senses. Not just the lustful that many associate with her fiendish blood, but also enjoying food, enjoying environments, and finding pleasure in everything. Even a barren wasteland holds unique spirits to find, new plants, small insects, and perhaps even new diseases. She's generally curious and likes to experiment and experience things in her day-to-day life.
### Biography ###
Birth Family: The Duskseers; one mother, one father, two sisters. Left due to distance and a lack of mutual interest.
Hidden: show
Mother: Amber Duskseer (Status: Alive). Tiefling. Conjuration Wizard, Chaotic Evil. Fourty-Eight Years Old.
A tiefling that came to Sshamath from Skullport to study at the famed magical schools, Amber is a novice wizard of some power. She is a conjurer who specializes in abyssal conjurations, forming powerful connections with creatures. She is neutral evil and believes that magical power outweights all other merits. She is an abyssalist, giving worship to Malcanthet.

A secret she kept from her family, was that she is seeking her and Scarlet's shared ancestor in the abyss, Gapbgooget.

Father: Jacob Duskseer (Status: Alive). Human. Warlock, Chaotic Evil. Thirty-Nine Years Old.
A human and once a slave, who was bought and freed by Amber after she fell for his relatively good looks. Amber was initially disappointed a bit by his lack of arcane talent, but she taught him enough that he was able to form a pact with Malcanthet. This pleased her, and Jacob was all too eager to please his lover.

Sister #1: Rose Duskseer (Status: Alive). Tiefling. Conjuration Wizard, Neutral Evil. Twenty-Four Years Old.
Scarlet's twin sister, who was born with Rose-Red skin (hence her name). She studied in the Sshamath School of Conjuration and currently apprentices under a drow matron.

Sister #2: Opal Duskseer (Status: Alive). Human. Conjuration Wizard, Neutral Evil. Twenty-Three Years Old.
Scarlet and Rose's younger sister, who joined Rose at the Sshamath School of Conjuration. The two became thick as thieves, with Rose always watching her younger sister's back.
Adopted Family: The Silbeys; one mother, one daughter. Adopted via friendship and service.
Hidden: show
Mother: Lilith Silbey (Status: Alive). Human. Sorcerer. Neutral Evil. Fourty Years Old.
A human born in Sshamath, Lilith's in-born arcane power is the only thing that saved her from being collared as a slave. She worked extensively with the local humans and human planetouched of her local neighbour in the Darkwoods, acting as a mediator, protection racketeer, and small-time gangster for a handful of local houses. Lilith was known to sleep around in local taverns to earn additional coin, and a chance one-time encounter with a travelling merchant resulted in the birth of her daughter. Scarlet was keen to put her talents to use for Lilith's ends and that ended up pleasing the woman (along with Scarlet's friendship with Lilly) enough to give Scarlet a seat at the Silbey family table.

Daughter: Lilly Silbey (Status: Alive). Human. Sorcerer. Neutral Evil. Twenty Five Years Old.
Like mother, like daughter. Even Lilly's name is similar to Lilith. Lilly displayed her arcane powers from a very early age, and joined her mother in order to lend more power towards their little small-time crime ring in the Darkwoods. Lilly and Scarlet ended up having a falling out after Lilly was determined to steal something from a matron that Scarlet felt was unwise to take. This caused Scarlet to leave Lilly's presence, though Scarlet kept the name Silbey out of respect for what she considered to be an industrious family.
History: Sordid, Ugly, Cruel, Dark. The underdark is not a good place, Sshamath is not a nice place, and the Darkwoods is a forgotten ghetto of those who are on the fringe of drow society. Scarlet's upbringing was not a pleasant, or kind one.
Hidden: show
  • Scarlet was born to her family. From an early age, Scarlet showed promise towards wizardry. She also secretly spoke to spirits, at first through dreams and then slowly she began to awaken to the spirit world. She acquired her guide in her youth by encouraging Whispering Pox to claim the life of a vagrant near her home.
  • Scarlet attended the Sshamath school of necromancy primarily, but also dabbled in everything that wasn't enchantment. She was very introverted and unlike her sister tried to avoid Sshamath society due to her interest in reading and in interacting with the spirit world. She eventually came out of her shell, but was never "quite there" in the moment of things like visits to the Spider's Kiss festhall or social gatherings amongst the other wizards.
  • Scarlet grew distant from her own family, favouring the Silbeys focus on practical matters rather than her mother's obsession with the arcane for its own end. While she loved the arcane and study, it was always as a way to further her own power. She learned the value of social power from the Silbeys and ended up leaving her own family for theirs - even taking on their name. The fact that her own family didn't care one whit, just sealed the fact that she didn't like them very much.
  • Eventually, Scarlet, Lilly, and a friend of theirs got roped into a scheme that involved stealing an object from a drow matron. Scarlet was sure this was a bad idea and pressured her friends to avoid carrying out the course of action. Lilly and their mutual friend fell into greed, resulting in them wanting to follow through despite Scarlet's warnings.
  • Scarlet, feeling her advice was not going heard by Lilly and their mutual friend - and also feeling like the path her friend was on was suicidal - ended up leaving the Silbeys and going her own way. She kept the Silbey name out of respect for their family and her friendship with them.
  • Scarlet travelled the underdark, eventually meeting and adventuring with a caravan that was travelling to the surface; smuggling goods to Darkhold. She ended up taking this caravan all the way to Soubar via some hidden passages.
Future: Uncertain, Exploration, Optimistic. She is new to the Sword Coast and is eager to explore it and learn its secrets.
Hidden: show
Now in a new land in the surface, Scarlet is excited to see what new knowledge she will learn, what new spirits she will meet, and what new toils there are to perform. She will try to find new evil spirits to shepherd, and she will try to find a way to be productive in the physical plane as well.
Plot Hooks
Hidden: show
  • Scarlet's old family may venture up to the surface, likely landing in Darkhold or Soubar. They may recognize her and perhaps that will cause tension or new partnerships. It is likely Scarlet's sisters did well in the Sshamath school of conjuration and are likely connected to political ecosystems.
  • Scarlet's adopted family are still in the Darkwoods and it is unknown if Lilly and their mutual friend survived or even attempted the theft. Scarlet might meet them again if she is ever in the area.
  • Whispering Pox and Scarlet may meet new spirits of plague and disease to fold into the many of Talona.
  • Scarlet learned Loross because she was fascinated with the prospect of getting to study first-hand accounts of Netherese culture and artifacts. She might just stumble across one, especially given the Netherese Maze that connects the surface and the underdark.
  • Scarlet often has memorable dreams, usually unpleasant nightmares. She is liable to scream a lot at night while sleeping, and this kind of thing makes it difficult for her to sleep in crowded areas where others will be disturbed by her night terrors. This is both caused by her contact with evil spirits and her own tiefling nature.
  • Scarlet dwells most often in Soubar, in a tent near the ruins of the Black Abbey or on the outskirts if it is too crowded on any given night.
  • Many evil mages seek extended life-spans and Scarlet is no exception. She is fascinated with the prospect of learning how to extend her own youth and life via blood magic.
