Akari is a young woman hailing from Wa (Kara-Tur), and more specifically from the Aru Province. She grew up during a time when there was a lot of peace and happiness in the northern part of Tsukishima, thanks to daimyo Benju Matsutomo’s approach on governing the people. Her uncle is Yuji Takaesu, the daimyo’s right-handman, a chief who oversees the training of samurai that are rumored to be equal to the shogun’s very own personal bodyguards. And those are known to be incorruptible.
The samurai are called the Home Guard, warriors who patrol the mountain passes and escort pilgrim trains safe to and back from the Shining Temple of Bishamon. This pilgrimage is one of the oldest traditions in the region. Both her brother as well as Akari were training to become part of the Home Guard, her brother being a little older was the first to receive this honor. But things went wrong, starting with the murder of a pilgrim whose body was left at the Shining Temple, pierced by a gaki-spear.
At first the locals were convinced the evil spirit was behind the attack and thus some Mounted Samurai were sent to track down a known jiki-ketsu-gaki. Akari’s brother was among those men and during a snow storm got separated from the others after which he disappeared without leaving any useful tracks. In the years after it was assumed the creature took him, but Akari never truly gave up on him. At some point, with the help of a fellow warrior and a spy, she learned that more than once young men had been captured and taken by bandits, and this as a part of a larger organisation. One specialized in human traffic.
All the leads brought her directly to Baldur’s Gate. Having arrived there now she tries to find a way through the Fields of the Dead to reach Soubar, hoping to find her brother…
