The Velvet Veil
Nestled within Mist Lake’s inner garrison, one can find The Velvet Veil, which is most akin to an oasis from the harsh conditions of the surrounding Underdark. It’s an establishment that radiates luxury from its polished obsidian walls, to its carefully curated lighting, to the crystals embedded into the floor that create ornate patterns.
The Veil’s main hall features a massive circular bar, shelves stocked with the likes of rare vintages (Ulaver, Glow, and Salt wines), as well as fire lichen (fiercely hot liquor fermented by duergar), and gogondy (hallucinogenic ruby wine fermented by deep gnomes). Despite the vast selection, behind the bar are arguably the main draw: Philia and Sarika, two bartenders capable of making almost any alcoholic drink, but it’s their flair and charm which produces regulars. This central fixture anchors the eccentric atmosphere, while tables and lounges upholstered in exotic hides are carefully placed spreading outwards.
In the back rooms, one can generally find Ty'zurq and Xarxikas holding court over a high-stakes card game. The former's reputation as a notorious gambler is only exceeded by his mounting debts, and the latter is the establishment's resident card dealer, infamous for his quick fingers and questionable luck. On the raised balconies, two regulars often lounge in the dark: Thalgar and Jysril, both reputable in their own right, however, many would argue their notoriety stems more from their imposing four-legged companions.
Yet the opulence is more than mere decoration. It's a deliberately crafted, albeit thinly veiled (pun intended) facade concealing the establishment's true purpose. Beneath the ambiance, the Veil operates as the nerve center for Bregan D'aerthe's clandestine operations and covert dealings. The organization enforces a strict code: neutrality, hospitality, and absolute confidentiality. Rivals are known to share a table without weapons being drawn, and secrets traded across the bar are said to stay there. The reputation that the Veil keeps its word has made the place a favored haunt for patrons regardless of status or creed.
