Warlock hunters/haters.

Unread post by NegInfinity »

The server could use more of the warlock hunters/haters.

I think I've only seen people to react to eldritch magic twice during my entire time one the server.

Where did all the delusional zealots go?

Speaking of which some racists(vs tieflings, orcs, elves) would be nice too.

+1 on Warlocks

Elves, oh there is enough hate out there for sure (setting shouldn't support elf hate). -1
Orcs, maybe not enough hate per the setting, but when you play one it becomes apparent.+1/2
Tieflings, they tend to hide themselves well, but there should be more concern for sure. +1

Of course, you need to be talented enough to ID them as warlocks ... not just metagame them.

Spellcraft or lore: arcana would a good way for a character to discern who is a warlock, to characters that know nothing of these two skills, it would just be magic to them, with spellcraft the character actually knows what eldritch incantations is, as he or she is able to identify them when they're cast, and as a character with lore: arcana you would probably know this isn't any kind of magic you have seen before.
So if you make a character that hunts warlocks and witches, having one of these skills seems mandatory to me. When that's said bring it on, would love some warlock hate. :)

The problem is that when RPing a blanket warlock opposer, you'll be met with hostility from people babbling about warlocks not choosing their own pact and such. Or that it's a benevolent pact or whatever.

And in fact, most people who play warlocks appear to write their biography in a way that doesn't make the character responsible for the pact. Inherited or forced or otherwise. It's as absurd as all these Aasimar on the Sword Coast who aren't even related to mulhorandi people.

Besides hostility, they also do get accused of being "delusional zealots", just like you suggested here. Where's the delusion, though?

Racism is often met with similar hostility, but as I understand it, the Baldur's Gate area is lorewise relatively tolerant on such matters. And Amn doesn't even outlaw association with underdark races (for instance, trading with illithids and drow is fine).

But that's the fun part of it.
Inherited, forced -> it is still evil or dangerous source of power, why is the character still using it? Besides who says the warlock isn't lying? It is the price to pay for using the class, and the part that makes the class fun.

"Benevolent pact" is something for DM to decide whether it is available or not in this setting. Frankly, the whole "made a pact" thing opens a big can of worms regarding warlock source of power. I'd rather not touch that.

That was a joke/"tongue-in-cheek" statement.
I don't play good alignments. But I would surely appreciate running into good-aligned cleric who takes eldritch magic seriously. It leads to amazing situations when it happens. (which is once per 10 years, apparently)

---

Maybe DM team would be interested in creating some kind of warlock hunter(s)?

I just want to throw it out there that eldritch magic is punishable by death in Amn, and I have had someone use it against my character in Beregost not 10 feet away from the guards... And I got fined for it.

And no, I do not want to discuss this as it will only lead to me going on another rant about how it was BS, which will lead to me getting another ban.

It is banishment OR death, but it also applies to baldur's gate and environs.

I guess i just never got the entire bigot / rage thing...

What diff does it make to someone who isn't a warlock / Half-orc, what-ever when it's some else's choices we are talking about...

This kind of petty hate - It's just ignorance and evil at it's worst.

That sort of doesn't really change the ridiculousness of what happened.

What????

I have found that many who make the choice of playing a Half-Orc, Tiefling, whatever are THANKFUL if someone actually acknowledges their choice with appropriate IC reaction, such as racism. FR is not modern society where Racism has been identified for the heinous, evil thing that it is. It's completely normal for a Human to react distrustfully to a Half-Orc or Tiefling, even react with immediate violence against a Grey Orc. It is also natural for a Dwarf to be hostile towards Elves (or any non-Dwarf!)

As for using Eldritch/Warlock powers, if one can identify what they are it is really the same as one might react in today's society to someone using illegal weapons such as fully automatic rifles. Even if you're hunting, you're still breaking the law.... Now make that automatic weapon firing person also tatted up with devil worshipping symbols who seems to be worshipping Satan while not firing his gun, reaction probably changes a bit, if someone see's him/her doing this. However, some gun-enthusiasts might not care at all, just like some intrigued Wizard may very well want to simply study the power at your Warlocks fingertips. However, it is an equally valid reaction to feel this pact-mage must be brought to swift and final justice to prevent the spread of their evil ways.

In the end it is about cooperation with each other. React how you would react In Character and go from there. Let the Warlock wax philosophic about how there was no pact and make a sense motive check/ask for a bluff check (requires DM to demand, but you can still ask)... Better yet, as was mentioned you can say, 'great, but you are still using demon granted powers!' Point being so long as you are not meta-gaming the information and working with the transgressor there should be no cause for animosity based on IC reactions.
