Well into the night a gathering took place within the Northern Lights Tavern in the southern village of Nashkel. A rather unique group of individuals most would say. With different backgrounds and future goals, they all came together for one passion: that of Magic. For hours the group remained behind closed doors with tavern patrons occasionally looking toward the warded doors wondering what they could be discussing at length.

Another meeting took place in the Northern Lights Inn of Nashkel, a number of new faces present as they spoke at length into the night. At times voices may have sounded contentious, but they all left amicably in the end, and those five who stayed eventually went for a walk in the southeastern direction.

Topics included elections for the establishment of a council, potential restrictions of a controversial nature, a mageduel tournament to be announced publically and many, many introductions.

"Is that why you are killing them?"
"Yes. They will atone in death."
"Ah. That will help them understand."

Word spreads of a tournament between magi to be hosted in the near future. Posters are hung up in settlements across the coast, and at any inquiries to the messengers one would be told that the Guild of Magi are looking to hire skilled healers for this event.

The day came and the hour for the duel to commence, and registrations were opened, participants coming slowly and ending with five magi to pit their skills against one another in the arena north of the duchal farmlands. Amabiro Shyste, Arianna, Frigo Deepocke, Gray and Sirion Te'Dwa, members all of the Guild of Magi.

Image

The Flaming Fist made a presence to keep a watchful eye on the tournament, having heard reports of the outlaw Terri Lalani near the arena at some time in recent memory.

The tournament was judged by priestess Aeili Azenci of the church of Mystra, who also took registrations to compete and announced each new duel according to the format chosen for the tournament; that in every round, each participant would face two other magi, and only those with the most wins would pass to the next round until a final winner was left.

Image

Many colorful displays were seen as the duels continued, the priestess sounding a high pitched whistle at the end of each duel and sometimes teleporting down to offer healing to the contestants.

In the end, the finalists faced off against eachother; the sorceress Arianna against wizard and Arch Magus of the guild Sirion Te'Dwa.
Arianna was declared the winner and rewarded with ten bags of coin as announced, as well as an unexpected fifteen bags from the church of Mystra.

Image

At the end of the tournament it was declared that the arena be open for all to duel freely, and three men entered the arena, speaking no words as they lined up and put a blade to each their throats. Only one could be stopped in time. Some of those on the spectators' rows were drawn to the arena, others watched shocked into silence.

As leaves began to rustle around the fallen the sound of laughter could be heard, and soon a rift to another plane suddenly opened in the middle of the arena and Unseelie fey poured forth from what lay beyond.

Image

The reactions of those present were many, but whilst others fought off these new enemies amidst the confusion one rushed to seal the rift. After the battle was ended the priestess, aided by a few others, began to mend the Weave in the area.

With everything that had happened in the end, knowledge was exchanged relating to this sudden event, the crowd drawn to smaller groups engaging in discussion for a short time until gradually they all departed.

The region was clearly going through troubled times, but when was it not? Of the tournament itself, some may have noted reluctance to participate. Could it be secrecy, pride, disinterest or something else entire? The region also surprisingly unused to such a common display of magic, one thing was obvious for the guild.

There was much yet to be done.

As the Arch Magus withdrew from the scene he thought of things to do better when the next time comes, to make things run more smoothly. Of how to get magi both within and from outside the guild to take part. Of trusted advisors missing for a time, of the newly established council and other positions in the guild both vacant and recently filled and how to make the most of it all. Of registration of apprentices into the guild, a debate of values to promote and stipulations for admission into the guild, among many other issues to address.

There was so much yet to be done.

(( OOC Tally from the tournament: Two shadow demons, a retconned balor, a disqualification, a retconned missile storm from a Flaming Fist officer against Arianna during the final, three suicides and a rift to another plane. I have no words.

Note to self: Pester DMs about whether mageduel rules-nay-reality can be enforced, lest annoying gnomes be annoying. Looking at you, Chambordin ))

*A small boy would walk up to Sirion when he was around his usual bench at the friendly arms inn, the timid boy would say with a slight stutter.. "T..- the old m.. man s-said I.. Sirion pushed himself up to a sitting position to have a look and flashed a smile he would not have had the old git delivered his message himself, in hopes to reassure the seemingly nervous boy.

"I do not bite! Ask around, I am far too lazy to bite. Thank you, kid, let me have a look. Here, something for your trouble."

As he reached out to take the letter with one hand he then reached into his satchel rummaging briefly with his other for some coins to give to the boy. After reading the message, Sirion scribed the boy a short message of his own to be returned to Damien.

Expedition to Ulcaster's Ruins
The 28th of The Drawing Down, Year of the Dragon 1352 DR

An expedition twice postponed finally set out to explore the ruins of Ulcaster's old school near the town of Beregost. They made camp just inside the ruins to prepare their spells and slowly made their way through the ever changing paths of the old school. At new puzzle encountered, those unfamiliar would try to reach the solution by themselves, under the watchful eye of the "guild mom" taking notes in her book every so often.

A riddle with colorful pillars to be sorted seemed on the verge of being solved when Gray somehow appeared from behind the door they sought to gain entry to. A room with levers proved frustrating, but when Frigo Deepocke appeared with a wand to teleport this challenge too was left unsolved. A final challenge too was avoided proving once and for all that mages are not all necessarily very interested in brain teasers.

Image

A short time was spent in the great library where spells still active still seemed to prevent the removal of any books from the old shelves. As the remaining four magi crept into the concealed room wherein lay a shadow portal, only one question remained.

What could possibly go wrong?

Not Quite a Treasure Map
The 6th of Deepwinter, Year of the Arch 1353 DR

To investigate a map previously found on a fallen lich by the name "Ba Wu Ju," arch magus Sirion Te'Dwa and the Elven ranger Viridiana Nierdre made for the graveyard to the east of the city of Baldur's Gate. By the gates they waited for a time as high magi Frigo Deepocke and Natalya Vaen'tsoss made their way to join them, bringing along a halfling acquaintance of Frigo's met by chance, and being followed by a curious stranger as they walked through the graveyard toward the location marked on the map.

Image

Near their destination a large number of undead were sensed from a distance, still they approached cautiously, confounded by the way the skeletons, blackwood treants and flaming horses did... nothing. Their only reaction to the presence of others the words "Join us," and then at the inquiry of whether they knew anymore words than that, "Join us... now."

A few fingers itching attack, nevertheless the group pressed on, finding one or two equally if not larger gatherings of undead, until finally they came upon a campsite where a man had set up an altar dedicated to Jergal and consecrated the ground. At this point the elf Elyssa Symbaern of Doron Amar appeared to join the group. At this altar the man whose name was Romero waited for midnight, when the undead would no longer be kept in this docile state and it would be his task to lay them all to rest. After some talk of two particularly fearsome ghosts awoken by the lich whose map they followed, Romero presented the group with a task.

Image

30 years was a long time to be on the job said Romero between a few hiccups, as he charged the group with defending the altar, the failure to do which would result in the undead probably marching on the city. In return for this favor, while he went on an ale-run and to meet a ladyfriend... Romero would present them with an amulet that could lead them to the two ghosts "Despair" and "Defeat," and weaken them, claiming that without the amulet they would be nigh undefeatable. Their prowess confirmed by magus Frigo who had encountered these ghosts before, the group agreed to the task and Romero took his leave.

Image

The little time until midnight was spent erecting magical wards and discussing their strategy to keep the dead at bay. Having been so clever as to bring no clerics with them and none skilled with trapping to use the holy traps in the supplies Romero had left for them, they had to rely on what means they brought with themselves, except for a "boom stick" Romero had left as well, a wand enchanted to produce balls of fire.

Once determined that none would approach from the side of the altar that had been consecrated, they faced the direction of the undead already passed by, and made sure not to move too far lest a few sneak in behind them. At magus Frigo's initiative, many undead were slowed in areas of grease and consequently struck with fire, light and meteors, and though a few casualties were taken, all were recovered and by the end the dead lay dead again and the group stood alive to face Romero as he returned.

Upon his return the amulet he had spoken of was passed to arch magus Sirion Te'Dwa, with the knowledge that the ghosts are drawn to suffering, would only be seen at midnight and might not stay at the graveyard for long. The group departed, and later the amulet was passed to Shandril Brightmantle to bring to the clerics of her temple, with an offer of assistance should the need arise.

Gathering Ingredients
The 19th of Deepwinter, Year of the Arch 1353 DR

After some other conversations outside the drawbridge of the Friendly Arm inn, arch magus Sirion hired an Elven archer by the name Delor Dana who offered his services as a mercenary. They left for the cave northeast of the walls apparently in search of components to be used in the preparation of spells.
