I´m here to enjoy this IP, because that I know: I love what´s been put together by you, by whoever is behind the IP. And that drives me in a way, I carry on as a new man would, guided only by the love -- no other way to call it. I´m open to learning, to be respectful, and if anyone gives me cr*p well, that´s not what I´m here for, and most importantly, I know it´s not what D&D is about. I remember my first and only pen and paper game to date, long story short I didn´t understand anything and got kicked out quite soon, but it blew my mind to discover what was possible. That you could create your own LOTR and adventure in it, that´s a sensation only RPs know, and it´s one of the most amazing sensations.

Thank you guys for being kind to me, last night was my first and I found really warm, welcoming people, so patient with me.

I think I may have been a part of the group you encountered last night (if that was you on the dwarf fellow), and again, I'd like to say "Welcome to the server, to Forgotten Realms, and to roleplaying". You already have the right idea, if you ask me- you aren't going to know a damn thing at first, and you're never going to know it all (I've been doing this for aaages, and I have barely scratched the surface of all the information that is out there). Be prepared to make your mistakes, and maybe even step on some toes- it's all a part of the process. In the end, however, I find it worth it.

Again, welcome aboard! Please don't hesitate to ask anything you need to- we want to help you enjoy this world as much as we do, and even if one of us doesn't know an answer to your question, we can probably point you to someone or some resource that does.

Good vibes, good vibes.

Don't fret so much as a new player about making mistakes - that's how you learn. I made awful mistakes when I was new to roleplay, and awful mistakes when I began to play on this server in the FR setting.

I've now leaned towards becoming quite interested in FR lore and incorporate that in my characters, which can seem daunting to new players. I never hesitate to explain OOC or give pointers to easy summaries.

For any new player out there, I recommend to actually pick a spot on the map - where your character is from - and read up on the basics of that area. It gives an easy conversation topic as where someone is from is typically one of the first questions asked.

Also, don't be a shy wallflower. It makes it very difficult to engage and be included. If your character is shy, utilize emotes. I never know how to react to characters who say or do nothing (IE the player doesn't write anything).

I've been playing here on and off for seven years and I still have problems with this. I love to RP, but as a very introverted person it's sometimes hard to apply outgoing traits to my characters. When I first started here I met some very outgoing people who pulled me into a story full of intrigue, torture, and eventually a small war in the shadows of the underdark. As that story finished itself and people slowly filtered out of the UD I ended up doing my own thing again, and kept doing my own thing with only little bits of meaningful RP here and there until the next time a group came along that pulled me with them.

This server is a wonderful place with many outgoing people who want only to craft a good story for everyone. If you're in a situation like my own and find it difficult to insert yourself into the overall story then please, do yourself a favor and make characters that can follow the story makers. It's strange, but I find that characters who are less than social are harder to play if that's how you are as a person. You'll miss out on so many things if you try this. I highly recommend you try characters that are social and interactive, that way when someone else pulls you into a story you can play an active role.

It won't be easy, but it's rewarding enough to make it worth the effort.

As a rather seasoned DnD player I know FR lore up and down and backwards. I've also been DMing / playing for the better part of 20 years since I was a wee lad. All that being said, I don't think I can articulate how intolerant I am of RP Police and elitism. I could certainly do any of that given my background but to what benefit? The message above about server dies with no new blood is true. A week or so ago, despite being a new player myself only having been here since early Jan I grabbed 3 n00bs in the farmlands. I took them on a wild ride through cloakwood mines and all three were like "That was one of the best online experiences I've ever had". I'm not a DM (I applied) I simply see no reason to not engage everyone and bring shared social enjoyment.

Speaking of which, I lurk heavily here and especially watched the thread about playing evil by the veteran players. Part of the reason I applied as DM other than my long experience (And I am a level designer which is needed too) is that I would hit it from that other side. I am in no clique, I don't have long term friends, and I would be willing to ice my characters just to DM. There is nothing wrong with that. But I do think that there is probably some inherent bias towards vet players on these things and that isn't surprising too. But it can stifle, to be sure. Not going to dig that up again as you can read the let the DMs be evil thread for it but I commiserate highly with many on that topic. Fresh and new = good.

As for RP Police / Elitism... I tend to have rather how do I say? Violent reactions. It works out though in the end. If your character IC is a jerk you will be treated as such. If OOC you are a jerk you will be treated as such. See what I just did there? Win win! Actually, I'm partly kidding. If you are IC a jerk then you likely know that may elicit a sharp reaction and/or violence, I feel no qualms about that. If you are OOC like that, I tend to just avoid. There is no changing that type of thing I've found so even if I can burn your character down mechanically in game it would be a hollow victory in the end. (Not to mention as a new player this probably is not the case).
