Which choice, if you make one here, seems more realistic?
A, a locked chest should have something inside, even if it is just that cherised bottle of wine, or your favorite ale stein.
More fun?
A, it is more fun to open chests and see what random stuff is inside.
More helpful (like to low STR toons)?
B, I've played low strength characters and I tend to not 'loot' with them nearly as much simply because they cannot carry the first banded mail home, let alone the eight in row...

I edited my earlier post to include chests—or whatever loot container—to contain some amount of Coin. As well, gems.

In a real D&D world, we'd have at sorts of different coin types, but in NWN2 we're limited to gold. But gems do come in a small package with high value, which makes them good. And, sensible, to be more massively available.

Additionally, there would be a Gem Merchant in one town or another, that would purchase them for the going Market Value (at that time, which could fluctuate under effect of any Event(s)). Amber gems, anyone?!? ;)

A) Opening 100 chests for 100 (+/-) +1 items, having to vendor for 100k gold coin, so your toon can purchase Bracers of Armor +4 w/ Haste (10; 3/day).

B) Opening 100 chests, 99 (+/-) being empty but at least one time, that chest containing a Bracers of Armor +4 w/ Haste (10; 3/day).

(Item being simply an example of "upper Tier" NPC Merchant item that sells for 100k).

You may also consider the 2 options with different values, if that seems more appropriate to you.

EDIT: Chests and containers would continue to contain coin and gems...in abundance!!! 8-)

Opening 100 chests and 99 of them being empty is the exact definition of "not fun"

By the way where can one purchase these bracers for 100k? I need them

The jump in cost from a +3 items to a +4 items is incredibly insane in many cases

Not really... A regular +3 armor or weapon might fetch ~5K at Mudd's. A +4 item between 5 and 35K depending on what it is. Full Plate +3 is likely to get ~15K while +4 Full Plate might get 35 (possibly more). Now, for Dodge/Natural/Deflection items? Sure there is a big jump, but still FAR less than what it was before epic shops. +4 Dodge Boots used to cost at LEAST 700K. Now they're around 250, that is a pretty significant drop in value!

In the real world, there are many examples where you can get something that is nearly the best for a relatively minor increase in cost, but going for the BEST is a significant jump in price. It just depends on what you are buying. Supply and Demand and all of that.

I am just going to say let it ride out a bit people. Now that the RIG to chest system bug has been found and fixed this needs time to see the effects. While I am all for UBER LEWTS. I also try to understand what this server is trying to avoid with power creep. The vanilla divine classes and some others already broke that power creep to some extent so adding in more UBER LEWTS would create more. Now do I really care about that knowing DMs can create challenge no matter what you do or have? NOPE not one bit but I do try to understand their side of the mountain. Let's let it iron out and see how it goes for a month or two yeah?
