The easy solution to that is to just keep a few different sizes of wrecking bar. Just remember the old adage for the weight of equipment. Ounces lead to pounds, and pounds lead to pain.Tekill wrote:You have all made some solid choices, but we here are some tips that might save your lives....at least for a little while.
@ Hoihe- The staff has to be enough to not just crack skulls but to smush brains. This is not Walking dead where a typical zombies skull is as soft as a over ripe cantaloupe. The flesh is soft and rotting, the bone still is somewhat solid and hard. It has to be a thick staff.
If you are going to convert the staff into a spear then do not use duct tape. You get enough zombie gore on that tape and it will get lose. Bolt any blades you use onto the end of a staff. There are YouTube videos showing how to do it. Watch them quick before we lose power and the net!
The Zombie Spear would be my choice. Quick stabbing motion, very efficient at killing many zombies with little energy and you do not have to get close to them.
@Arn - Baseball bat is easy to obtain and solid enough to squish brains. A metal bat would be easier to clean to. The wooden bat would soak up the stench of death and rot very easy.
The only draw back is to swing a bat, requires a wide arc. If you are surrounded, it is going to be hard to swing that thing to take them out. Close quarters, and you are in trouble.
I recommend a child's aluminum bat. They are smaller, lighter, but still strong enough to crush brains. I think you will have much better success.
@Lockonnow - A Katana would be ideal. Super sharp, super light. You can slash or pierce.
But good luck finding an authentic one at the end of the world- a machete, maybe.
@Maecius - My first thought after reading your post was that you were going to be that friendly overly trusting character in all zombie movies. The one that everyone likes but usually always meets a horrible swarmed zombies death in the first quarter of the movie.
Then I thought about it. If you look at it big picture, there is no point surviving the impending apocalypse if you are the only one around that lives.
The best weapon is fellow survivors..equipped with proper zombie killing weapons!
@thids - I have put the book on my wish list. I hope to god it comes before we are overrun!
But I dont have Amazon Prime! I had to take standard shipping! Oh no's!
@Darradarljod The axe is a good choice. But like the bat it requires a wide swing. And it also can get wedged into zombies heads sometimes. Your axe looks like it might be less likely to get wedged into bone and such with the thinner blade. And you appear to handle it well... so it should do. But have a couple sharp knives handy for close combat in the event of worse case scenario.
@Ravial - Biological Warfare- A man made flesh eating disease is probably what created the zombie Apocalypse to begin with!
And now you want to use it again to try and stop them?!
You are trying to kill us all!
You will probably just end up creating some new kind of super zombie!
AREYOUMAD!?
@Izzul - a pragmatic version of maecius's idea. Sacrifice other survivors to save your own skin and exploit other survivors for their abilities. You have a true zombie survivors spirit. But I still recommend finding your signature zombie killing weapon.
@whatsittoya and Tsidkenu - the crowbar/prybar/wrecking bar is a solid choice but they are heavy and tiring to swing the more you use it. Have some back up knives at the ready just in case.
Okay I think I have given all the help I can give. The power has gone out here. I am on emergency generators now. Its not long before the internet goes down and I have to stop playing Baldurs Gate. I think I see a zombie herd coming from my window. Im so close to levelling though...I get Expose Weakness this level too! Shoot!
Well I will see you all on the other side!!

Imma stay inside till they natrually decompose.
Depending on the nature of the virus, I would assume the most realistic varriant would be a "rage virus", turning people crazy and give them a horde mentality. However.. even if it was supernatural, the zombies would likely not be able to sustain their bodies for more than a few weeks.
Hit those rations and strap in that belt. You might not feel great in 2 weeks of limited food. But you'll still be better of than those who only ate meat for a few days in the beginning...and nothing else.

Things in or near the house.
Common household items:
- hammer
- hand axe
- improvised shield from stop sign
- claw-rake handle made pointy
- axe/splitting maul, though it weighs 6-lb so intense cardio to use this much
Actual weapons:
- real Japanese katana
- bayonet for rifle
- pistol, while ammo lasts
- shotgun, while ammo lasts
- rifle, while ammo lasts
Most importantly, as Maecius mentioned, friends - survival in numbers.

Mostly this:

But if things MUST get personal, I'd say this:

I use one of the above bad boys about just every other day, so I'm easily greater weapon specialized. Light for many uses before tiring; quick and clean cleave for piercing skull; spike end useful for when too close for decent swing and one has to use 2-hands to push-spike right through the forehead plate.
Besides...the best friend is a man's well-made axe!

Quite true. My proficiency with the katana is nil at best (the handle-end is safe, the rest not so much). My experience with the other tools and firearms is far better though certainly not expert. Call me a casual user. Hence, friends become essential.Lockonnow wrote:Duster47 you need a samurai to wield a real Japanese katana not some one like us

Nice Bec de corbin, DG... One of the 1,000 weapons in 1st edition D&D nobody used because the damage was abysmal. Underappreciated weapon, to be sure!
I think in my house I have a shotgun, a katana, a wakizashi, a Braveheart style bastard sword, Sting replica, a medieval style short sword/broad sword and about a hundred assorted throwing stars, butterfly knives, switchblades, hunting knives and a longbow with maybe a dozen arrows. Additionally I've got my sons aluminum baseball bats from Tee-ball up to minors level and several relatively high powered nerf guns that could likely be jury-rigged with nails as a sort of improvised weapon against the zombies.
Should I be able to hole up in my home with some friends/family we will be relatively well protected, but were I forced to flee it would be a difficult selection. I'd likely carry the shotgun and as many shells as I could pack, maybe hit up a walmart or something for more buckshot. Then pack a duffle bag with a couple swords, some knives, spare string for the longbow and the arrows. If I go down, I'm taking some of those things with me! That includes you, Teo!

Re: It's the Zombie apocalypse! You need a zombie killing we
In reality, the medieval warhammer (rather than the fantasy warhammer), is a very versatile close-range weapon. It has a spike to pierce plate, a hammer head to hammer that previously pierced plate in for even more lethal stuff and a spike on top to even stab with. And if you get a hammer somewhat longer steel bar down the handle, it can even be effective at parrying (although you'd use this with a shield anyways).
If I were out in the open, the halberd would be my choice of weapon. But the warhammer is easier to wield in a close space.
