Kellen Nehpek conducts himself in a cold and detached manner, his habits feigning expertly those of the upper class in both his speech and action. However, when he engages in the most exalted act of his deity, Kellen allows his shroud of civility to fall away, revealing the monstrous thing that lurks behind his icy stare.
Background
Things began normally enough for Kellen in his youth.
Born the son of a farmer and his wife living on the outskirts of a small village in the foothills of the Spine of the World, he and his younger sister Allyna lived an idyllic existence. He spent his days helping his mother and father tending the animals and preparing for the harvest along with the other farmhands that made the village their home during the season. When he wasn't working, Kellen doted on his younger sister in what little ways he could, seeing her as one of the few friends he would ever have among the other village children who found the young boy odd even back then. But it would not be until one frightfully chill winter that things would change forever.
When Kellen was just twelve his entire village fell victim to one of the many raids done by the legion of Orcs who called the Spine of the World their home, though their hopes for survival had been perhaps raised by the presence of a group of Knight who had heard the news of the impending assault and came to the aid of Kellen's home. But despite the help of the knights, the village fell victim to not only the ravages of the hordes of orcs but the wrath of Auril as well.
A freak blizzard left not only the knights but Kellen and his sister trapped and the last to survive. With no supplies and no food, things began to look grim... at least for Kellen and his sister. The knights, however, began to take a more practical view on things as days stretched into weeks trapped beneath the insurmountable ire of winter's onslaught.
One night, when Kellen was asleep, the knights bound and gagged both children, awakening them to the sounds of arguing and fighting among their one-time saviors. Kellen soon realized what they were fighting over: which of the two children would last them the longest.
In the end, the knights chose his sister with the excuse that he was too skinny to make a proper meal.
Kellen screamed and fought against his bonds as they dragged his sister into another room, his cries and muffled promises of revenge silenced only by the halt of his own beloved sister's screams. His silence would last for years after that moment.
That same night the group ate of their blasphemous meal, forcing Kellen to partake until finally the snow and ice trapping them were broken through and the knights left the boy at the closest town as some act of kindness that only seemed to add insult to injury. He was alive, wishing he were dead. Wishing it had been him.
Kellen was never the same after that, something inside of him apparently broken beyond repair. A monster had taken root inside of him, one that was more than receptive to the sweet whispers of the Lord of Murder. The boy bounced from village to village until he finally landed in the city of Waterdeep where he was taken in as an orphan by a group of Ilmatari. His stay there was short, as the burgeoning Bhaalist would induct himself into the faith by strangling his caretakers in their sleep and disappearing into the streets of the City of Splendors.
