Re: How Often Do You Check Conditional Examine? (How often do DMs?)
I have a habit of checking both the normal and conditional examine of characters I either have never seen or haven't checked in a couple weeks - the latter for any potential changes, of course.

Re: How Often Do You Check Conditional Examine? (How often do DMs?)
I check both quite often.
I use examine mostly but like Conditional Examine. I think I have used it once or twice...for a couple little things.
I have a character that tries to have the spell Disguise Self up 24/7, where possible. It would be nice if I could have something for folk with True Seeing or related spells that could work with Conditional Examine - where they see through the illusion, and sees whats hidden underneath!
Maybe I can set something up with a disguise check ?
- I cant remember if I have fiddled with that or not.
Here is a short but sweet rant:
It is a bit of a pet peeve when I am like: 'say this character is kind of interesting, whats do they got in the ol'description?'
-So I hit examine/conditional examine and then BAM, I get slammed with a wall of text with every imaginable detail about the character!
"Her periwinkle cloak is seen fluttering lightly as it caresses....."
So to that I must confess that I am not a very fast reader, and my eyes are starting to go with age. When I finally get through scanning this wall of text my character meanwhile has just been standing there the whole time, idle, staring vacantly at you, ogling you like some sort of perv.
Trust me, you don't want that and neither do I. So, keep it short and sweet, for both our sakes.
For you future Jrr tolkien's out there, I can empathize, but a lot can be said for the expression: Less is more.

Re: How Often Do You Check Conditional Examine? (How often do DMs?)
It's the first thing I do when I see a new PC or one that I haven't seen in a while. Check examine, then check conditional examine. And yes, I'm one of those who are peeved when there's nothing written. Because then all I have to go off of is the character model. If there's something noticeable about your character, then it needs to be put into one of the examines. It helps enrich the world, and make your toon feel less two dimensional to me. Does your toon where a medallion my toon would see? Put it in examine.
On the flip side, the examine is for what our toons would see. And we can't know your entire backstory by looking at you. Going too far with the examine is immersion breaking. I can't tell your father and mother's name by looking at you, or any number of things.
But ... the worst of all ... is checking examine and seeing "Not much is known about your history . . . "

I have a hard time telling between male and female elves honestly. Please fill out your examines.

Re: How Often Do You Check Conditional Examine? (How often do DMs?)
Conditional Examine is one of the coolest things to offer. I am also lazy, and take forever to write them up for new PCs, but I give it 100% thumbs up for both personal use and to examine other people.

As a DM I always read the conditional examine, sometimes several times over a period of time as I can be forgetful.

That is awesome to hear, what sort of things are you looking for most often? Just general description or, as was mentioned, relationships and affiliations?DM Gixustrat wrote: ↑Thu Apr 08, 2021 8:26 pm As a DM I always read the conditional examine, sometimes several times over a period of time as I can be forgetful.

Re: How Often Do You Check Conditional Examine? (How often do DMs?)
I don't have anything specific I'm looking for when examining, but it is always nice to know that folks care enough to put the work in.
