Cormac MacArt purchased heal pots on the auction for 7200 gold pieces per 10 (within the last three to four days). He stood toe-to-toe with the Black Dragon in a battle of attrition... He took one of the heal pots while fighting injured and under duress...*puff* nothing. Three heal potions and nothing.

- Is it possible to find out who is selling bogus heal pots and ban their arse?

Hödr, a Warsling Sniper, was flanking the Black Dragon without injury and fully buffed. The next thing he knows, he is standing in the Fugue. His combat log reads, Hödr: Immune to Fear (15 times).

- Is it possible to find out what killed a character when his combat logs are void of explanation?

Cheers!

Wow. I am sure there is a backstory here, but for the life of me, I do not know what it is. To be clear, my character in this story is Hödr and he was killed without any explanation. Karma? I am not sure if the totality of Hödr's actions would warrant an unexplained death. But I will give you the benefit of the doubt.

Here too, I am not sure the totality of Cormac MacArt's actions that would also warrant him befalling a near-death experience due to some random purchase of poisoned heal pots.

Either way, I am seriously intrigued! Why karma?

With max appraise a heal potion costs 817 from the Thayan Enclave. That means a stack should on Mudds -- at a minimum -- cost 8987 gold (if you want to sell at bare cost, which includes the 10 percent markup).

If healing potions are selling for less than that, then consider why.

Good point. There was a time when heal potions were routinely available by a reputable source for 7,000 per 10. This begs the question - what is considered Max Appraise? Until recently, I had a 21st level Bard who could purchase heal potions from the NPC in Roaringshores for ~760 gold pieces. Nevertheless, your point is valid.

Just to be clear - this is a game! Was I upset when I used a potion and found out it was poison, especially when I needed it to survive, yes. However, I got over it quickly and moved on - I do not care - I am not seeking any banishment or retribution. I will not buy heal pots on the auction house again, to be sure, lesson learned.

However, the thought that this was good evil RP or something like that, is ridiculous. Where is the RP - it did not touch me except when I actually took the potion. That was the only interaction. I should be able to somehow go back and talk with the vendor (auction), try to find out who sold the potions, and then possibly seek him/her out or get the militia involved. Furthermore, don't you think the auctioneer would be very careful what he sells - people go to him because of his reputation, or at least that is how it should work. If he becomes known to sell fraudulent items, then his business would soon be over or shut down by the government.

As to the karma comment, not sure what that is about. I accept death when fighting a boss, it can always go wrong.

TPK.

My appraiser has 75 appraise and that is enough to get the best prices every time.

I checked the Roaringshore merchant, and they sell for 705 apiece.

It's been my understanding for like, ever, that the names on Mudds list are not to be treated IC ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Where have you been man? Although I'm sure a great many players treat them as IC anyways (obviously).

But, lets look at this from a practical POV: would Mudd take the names of sellers? Absolutely. What reason would a consignment procurer have for putting the names of his clients beside each and every item? This kind of defeats the purpose of using a third party to move goods, and encourages buyers to wait out the consignment time and make a better deal privately(as opposed to the seller re-uping the item and making Mudd more $). I dunno about you, but I've never been to a pawn shop that displayed the name of the person who consigned the goods there.

Unless your toons walk around with 80 - 90+ search, no, they probably wont have the means. (any time you want to test that theory though, I'm game! You will probably hate me after)

Just like classes of characters without the ability to detect or neutralize poison aren't going to have a reliable way to fend it off.

Steve wrote: ↑Sun May 02, 2021 1:30 am [W]hy is it an issue?
Because an NPC stands between the player vs. player experience. IC: Cormac and Hödr would have returned to Mudd's and sought his immediate support and recompense... which is impossible without DM support.
Yeah, bingo. Plus I'm pretty sure the gazillionaire Mudd family would be pretty keen on covering their asses by making sure the blowback from handing out lethal poison to their customers wouldn't land on them.
Blaze wrote: ↑Sun May 02, 2021 6:29 am Magically it could be traced back to the poisoner using '' scrying '' spell.

As ridiculous as it is from the OOC point of view for the reasons mentioned above, I find it interesting that all of this can have a twist in the RP point of view. Obviously, since an NPC is involved, it could have far worse consequences, be it a month (15 RL days) in hard labor, paying a high fee/fine, a bounty on his head, etc.

Many players are moving to find the culprit and RP is being generated around this ''''''joke''''''

PCs who auctioned potions without knowing about the poison could help track down the poisoner, the poisoner could escape and take refuge in the Underdark for example.

This is my personal opinion and although it is something that goes against the rules, giving a ban would take away the possibility of implementing severe consequences in RP after what happened.
I wont deny that this is generating RP between characters, but is it generating RP between the poisoner and their victims? What if their intention(in using the auction) is to avoid IC consequences, or worse, just to OOC'ly see people go to the fugue? I have a screenshot of the sellers name, a name that I don't recognize at all, and I have yet to see them online. Maybe it's just me, but this stinks to high hell of yet more lame alt-account trollery.

Candlekeep also sells Heal Potions, and Guild Thief's or Trade Domain clerics get an additional stacking 10% discount from the [Reputation] class feature.
selling 10 potions for 7600 for a profit is definitely possible.

You could use the potion as a focus for a scrying and trace who actually tainted the potion, all of which can be done with the help of a DM.

I don't know if creating and using poisons is illegal but killing and murdering certainly is.

I repeat that I am not in favor of what has been done, it goes against the rules and it is good to be punished, but I think it is better to give consequences in RP rather than banning a player for a week, a month or a year, if the penalty is high enough he may even be forced to sell or his equipment Icly for example.
The use of an alt I would take it as having used a fictitious name given to Mudd, scrutinizing the poisoned potion you could go back to the main pc so as to make the right consequences without taking refuge behind a level 1 pc used only as a mule / auctioner.

The staff will surely know how to manage everything, as well as refund the players in case of lost XP.

Perhaps I misspoke when I quoted 10 pots for 7,000. Kit, you are the reputable source I was referring to... Should it have been 10 for 7,600?

I actually offered to do this IC for free once but the problem is the player isn't contacting DMs as far as I'm aware, so there's nothing for Soni'vaphra to learn IC.

Poking at the vendors myself, I was also getting 705 each even with the Rep discount.

per 10:
7000 is practically zero margin, potentially fairly profitable if any of the potions did not come from NPC merchants though.
7200 is tight margin (~2% profit), but viable for max appraise.
7600 is decent margin (~7% profit) and still beats prices for anyone without serious appraise investment.

Regarding cause-of-death, I do think that the one-minute delay on secondary effects was probably the cause, as dropping to 0 Con and having HP drop to negative is probably a valid trigger, and would take effect even with little to no damage.

When the DMs say Mudds Consignment names are OOC, I’ll stop reading. But for now, what I can read and learn IG, is actionable. I could go on, but I’ll leave it at that.

Personally, I’d use the experience for RP, for interaction. If a PC was setting traps, it could also be used as a starting point for a discovery RP campaign.

It may be a bit lame that a toon got Fugued by it, but death means nothing on BGTSCC, so why not consider it a “knockout,” and have some fun hunting down the perpetrator? How about making an IC post on the Forum, CCing DMs, about the IC experience. Get players involved, the DMs, maybe a small event will manifest.

Easy justification for why names are OOC:

We have the same AH between Surface and UD.

Thus, if names were IC, then we would be knowingly buying goods from drow. This goes against BG laws, therefore they are OOC.

You can use detect poison on potions to tell if they are poisoned or not.

You can use neutralize poison to remove the poison from potions making them useful again.

Also, it's not a case of changing the icons etc. of a potion. You are able to add poison to any potion, making it poisonous. It's a game feature.
I actually think this is pretty ingenious EVIL RP, to fake potions that our Characters—but more so THE PLAYERS—rely upon with 100% certainty, but now are getting “tricked.”

Sure, it sucks because you the Player were not “aware” of it beforehand, so you get surprised. Surprise!!!

It’s funny, cause I start to think about everyone clamoring for a Time of Troubles experience, but then something like this happens, and then people freak out OOC (I’ve seen the OOC threats added to IG descriptions of OTHER items on the auctionhouse, subtle threats against the player selling poisons).

This was a great opportunity to have some RP, and now it’s getting ruined, imho. And that it’s getting “fixed” OOC by Staff, to protect players, is kinda lame (please don’t take personally).

As Ewe said, if it’s a game feature, why is it an issue?

I'm with Steve on this one.
