Server Split reality check

Unread post by Steve »

Since one cannot comment on the Server Split announcement, I didn't know where best to ask this question, hence a new distracting post.

My question: is the Split going to stay? I sensed a questionable tone in something Endelyon posted on Discord, and I also see some User confusion, a bit of difficulty, etc..

I'm not making any judgement here, just wondering what is the final "window" before this is permanent. Cheers.

I need some context, being that I am not on the unofficial discord server I would like to inquire further about what prompted this thread to be started.

Hey Steve,

I’ll post for the admins on this one. (It’s a system we have. We discuss something behind the scenes and only one of us usually posts to the community our collective decisions/thoughts.)

I’m going to be painfully blunt and honest with the community. We don’t know. It is a big change and with that comes a slew of different perceptions and difficulties.

We’re only at a week and three days in. We’re still gauging community and staff reactions to the split. We’re still trying to understand it’s pros and cons, gains and losses and a host of other things on the admin level and back end. We do want to take into consideration any possible player and staff frustration as well. Can we roll back to a single server? Possibly. Can we stay with the server split? Possibly.

We’re just going to have to wait a bit longer to understand all the pieces of the puzzle, as admins want to make the best judgement call possible for the community. We’ll be sure to update the community with any “official” announcements once we come to a determination.

I'm fine with the split too. Sure, it has its quirks, but most of them are manageable and not too gamebreaking. Having all those old areas to visit again makes it worth putting up with any issues, imho.

Considering the general state of nwn2 I have pretty much considered all the strange things a part of it, more or less.
Uhm. I do mean as a positive note;
I know of several inconventient, immersion breaking or even gamebreaking bugs or things that simply a part of nwn2 that are worse than the troubles I have seen with the server transitions.

So many oocly things are purposely and properly taken for granted and expected to be brushed over or ignored for the RP/play to restart properly.
I would assume eventually the players would just see the transition troubles as another one of those, but because it is new it would probably take some getting used to. Be it stealth breaking, teleports not working or buffs vanishing, etc.

I just rest, rebuff and then restart the RP/play to the best of my ability.

As far as mechanics themselves (not being able to rest for 10 min in order to rebuff, etc) and how much jank oocly people can handle is another question, I would say.

I think finally getting the split out was a great step forward. It still has issues that need solving, especially the crashes and QoL improvements for DMs, but I don't think rolling it back to single server is needed.

Good thread. I'm not in discord nor have I been in-game. I hope the staff and player base are able to power through the changes because they seem worth it to me. Also I hope the RCR period lasts the entire 2 months, because I would like to do my character changes later and never play again play when I feel like it.

Staff please let us know all in BOLD AND CAPS if the 100% RCR period is ever going to be CUT SHORT.

Right now I am having a very hard time liking this split. The servers are even more unstable than they were, just a couple minutes ago the server was up for maybe thirty minutes before crashing again after being up for maybe two hours. The line split of the server, to me, is a very odd line. I think it would be best to have it split between Surface and Upperdark/UD/DM Areas. I'm not saying that this means Surface and UD could not interact before anyone grabs their pitchforks. This just gives the stability to each server and the chance to grow in whatever way desired. This removes the issue of the current servers transition, I know I have seen the server crash when I have transitioned between the two a few times and other players. All would be needed is just logging into that server, to my understanding.

I think the server split idea is good just perhaps done in a different way. I understand that the team worked hard to do this and that it has only been less than 2 weeks of launch. But I watch that Bug report thread just grow, and grow adding more work upon those involved with it when it can be eased up with a good split.

Upperdark/UD areas take up very little space. This kind of separation does not adequately reduce the amount of map space used on server 1.

A good 70-80% of bugs reported in that thread have already been fixed and are just waiting for a bug fix patch to be pushed live.

Speaking as someone returning recently following the split, I think its great, both seeing old areas and the potential for growth.

Edit: Perhaps I don't notice the immersion breaking aspect of crossing servers because I have played on split servers in the past (my first server was one!) and am used to it.

There are currently no plans to cut the RCR period short, even if we were to rollback on the split. They're not connected.

Either way, we will definitely give at least 2 weeks notice before the 100% RCR period ends, per the initial announcement.

Thank you for the replies, official and not. Sure, this thread could also exist as a commentary on the split experience thread, as well, if helpful.

I guess what is REALLY important at this moment is getting the first (and/or more...) patches installed. I think the situation drastically needs this.

And then we’d all be in a far better position to evaluate.

Personally, the Split seems sooooooo very awesome, in theory. I love nothing more than tons of Areas to explore (even if they had the consequence of spreading thin the population...but another topic).

Over the past week, I’ve had so many crashes, not known what Server, or Nexus, I was on, that I must say it’s...uncomfortable. I’m not even touching RCRing and moving items until some reason and stability comes back...and I e been begging Zanniej for 100% RCR for over 2 years now!!

It’s not that I don’t believe the dev staff have chops, but that “putting up” with the quirks may be possible, but also so very annoying, that the general experience gets lowered, IF the Split stays.

That said, I’ll anxiously await the first patch to see how and where the Split Server improves. Cheers.

Love the return of old areas myself. And also the added security their return brings from dumb discord "I was just joking!!!" jokes.
