Looking In

Unread post by Sir_Carnifex »

Hello there!

It's likely that the crowd around here has changed completely since I was last around. At least I don't recognize any names. I was one of the members here at the infancy of the server and later a DM and Developer. I decided to see if this place was still around and, honestly, I have to say I was surprised to see it still going. I doubt that I'd find time to put yet another thing in my schedule in order to play again, but it's still nice to look back and remember the good times. I'm pleased to see that all the old stuff from events and RP sessions is still around to read. It was a blast going through all the old stuff.

Anyway, maybe I'll pop in and see how things have changed if I ever dig out the old NWN2 CDs.

Regards,

Akavit runs his own business and works 80+ hours a week. His return won't be happening.

Time. Always time. Right now I'm spending a lot of free time setting a virtual TT campaign for 3.5. If that doesn't go as planned (or takes less time than I think it will) I might pop in around here a bit, though I think the toolset is off the table. Back when I helped I was unemployed, then working part time and didn't have a family to look out for. Things are much different now.

Ha ha! Well hey, if we did one lasting thing in life it may be creating xenophobia in a video game world, go us.

I was mostly joking about the toolset, but hit me up if time opens or you change your mind. I know how life changes. My then-newborn is now a freshman in high school and keeps me on my toes.

You'll be happy to see some of the old areas remain, and some really nice new ones have come. The server is probably three times the size it was in your day, I'd guess, but your bridge across the Chionthar is still there.

Hope to see you around soon.

An old timer. Player/Dev.. maybe DM? I don't remember. Sheritomo Orestes was one character, I think? Maybe Flail?

Old people from old times, basically.

Akavit, if I remember correctly, was the one who put a lot of the new hak files together for the server when we were really getting into putting a lot of mod content in. I do know he was working with the armor/clothing customizer (or whatever you call it). I know he also did the primary script work for another server, but I don't remember if he did much scripting on this particular server. I think he got his start on it here.

I'm glad to hear the Wyrm's Crossing is still there. I saw the thread in which someone wanted to modify or remove it. I didn't like that! I can't count how many hours it actually took to get the pathing to work on that thing.

If memory serves, I think I still have a mostly-completed Gnoll Stronghold from the BG1 game on my computer, but I was having issues with certain portions of it and I never finished it. I think it's still on my old hard drive, but I've never felt like trying to get into that drive.

Twelve years ago when we tried it, we found that too many people conflated the server with real life, so it didn't work out. For every person who wanted to be true to the lore of Faerun, there were a dozen who wanted to view every drow as potentially good (until, say, they committed fifteen or so murders in the public eye) rather than assuming them to be a product of an evil culture and therefore most likely to be evil themselves. I don't mind exceptions, but when exceptions become the rule, they are no longer interesting.

That's not uncommon! Even I when I was first starting out in Forgotten Realms RP and such, I just didn't where to start. So I just related things to IRL, until I had a better grip on some facts of lore and such by reading enough over time.

So, in some cases, including my own? And I am sure many others. It takes a bit of reading source books to pull ones head out of their sphincter muscle. :P

It's like... diving head first into a portal not knowing what is on the other side! What can go wrong, eh?
After years of trying to give others a chance to prove to me they can shape up here, I have run out of patience. The numbers of nwn2 overall dropping in the past few years have told me the path others truly want to take. Actions speak louder than words.

It's not worth the investment.

I'm probably guilty of being overly trusting of monstrous PCs on many of my characters. Heck, a few of them have actually befriended either orcs or drow at some point in their lives, and while one or two of my characters show some hostility towards tieflings, it's far more common that my own tieflings have backstories full of bigotry and fiend-induced trauma than that anyone on my roster automatically assumes tieflings are trouble.

That being said, I do try to be nuanced about it. The initial interaction will likely color future interactions for a good while (for better or worse), and it'll be a lot easier for a drow or orc to fall out of favor with most of my PCs. And a lot of the trust will initially come down to "you're not killing me yet, so I'm not killing you yet", rather than "you say you're good, so I will knowingly put myself in a position where my life depends on you". (Though many of mine have historically rapidly befriended people who not only refused to take advantage of a moment of vulnerability, but went as far as to risk their own lives saving them.)
