Draconic Might Duration

Unread post by RedLancer »

Draconic Might

It's currently round/level, which means it gets no play other than occasionally as a bridge for paladins to cast their stacking STR/CHA buffs on top of it when two level-2 slots are needed versus a single level-4 slot.

In PnP, the duration is minute/level, which would actually get the spell some use from both arcanists (should they be granted access per PnP) and paladins.

An increase in duration could be argued if you anchor and adjust from Nixie's Grace, which is also one minute per level.

Draconic Heritage feat in addition to the True Believer feat... and you will get:

+5 Strength, Constitution, Charisma, and Natural Armor, in additions to sleep (useless) and paralysis (far more useful).

And if you use it with the Divinate Kit, with auto-extend spell applied to all Paladin spells... You get those bonuses for six minutes per cast at level 30.

So the question is, do you try to get +9 in Strength and Charisma by casting Draconic Might before Righteous Might and Glory, or settle for just +8 with Eagle's Splendor and Bull's Strength cast before Righteous Might and Glory, or are you happy with that +5 from one spell and thus allowing you to use your other spell slots for just about anything else as Paladin spell list does have a number of other short lived buffs.

So that would be at least a level 14-15 single class Paladin depending on your character's wisdom Modifier. Now, if we look past the warlocks, the mobs in that particular area can be tanked if a character possesses sufficiently high AC. Thus, if you can minimize the attacks that land, enemies can be brought down with relative ease even without terribly high AB or damage per hit, and a Paladin can raise both through his self-buffs. It should also be acknowledged how in that particular area, the mobs do grow stronger with your character's HD progression: they get extra abilities, and the warlocks eventually acquire enough blast dice to penetrate even the Spell Resistance of a level 30 character.

As for dealing with the warlocks... If you can spot them from afar: you can then approach these warlocks under the invisibility spell from a potion, scroll, or wand, and if your damage per hit is high enough, then they might not get a single invocation off. But not the most honorable thing to do for anyone who is not a Paladin of Arvoreen or something.

Three years is about the right amount of time to wait for a bump, yeah?

While we're at it (we're not at it), let's get this added to the Sorc/Wizard list, per PnP.

The issue mostly is to due with lack of developers in this manner who can do this. Rhifox was maybe the only one right now. I'm hoping for some more but it's been a bit quiet the last years it seems, won't lie there.

Ultimately I'd love to get some bugs sorted, specially the con bug plaguing the server right now. Which is one of the most annoying ones to date. Dae needs to get to it, but I've been waiting for quite some time there. Rhifox is afk for another month or two most likely and I don't know if she will be returning. Holo may be able too once they are completed with their schooling.

Mostly unfortunately saying is that we're kind of dealing with limited people right now. Most are builders, not developers, and the developers around mostly have things they are specifically good at. Rhifox was the better for this.

It's a trivial enough change, at least: Changing one 2DA cell, and one line of NWScript. Honestly more work to commit it (and especially to submit it as an outside patch) than to do it.

However, I feel some skepticism as to whether it should be done. BG's Draconic Might is noticeably more powerful than PnP (at least if you build for odd ability scores and take Draconic Heritage), in that all of its bonuses are +5 instead of the original +4. Extending its duration by an order of magnitude and adding it to another spellbook seems like an extreme choice in that context.

In my opinion, if in PnP arcanists can cast this spell, it should be allowed on BGTSCC.

But it’s duration should stay the same. If one wants to play with an extended version of the spell, choose the Divinate kit.

... You do realize it would be eligible for Extend Spell, right? :P

And there's a difference between doubling its duration and increasing it by an order of magnitude. Put simply, I'm skeptical that one should be able to get 60 minutes of +5 STR/CON/CHA off a single spell slot. The +5 Natural AC is of somewhat lesser concern, as apparently Spiderskin potions off a vendor will already cover that for anyone and their mother, but the ability scores are pretty hefty.

There are two versions of the spell in the literature. The variant in draconomicon is arguably more powerful, however both only have a natural armor of +4!

draconomicon:

+5 Str/Con/Cha (enhancement), +4 natural armor (enhancement), immunity to sleep and paralysis. Sorcerers +1 CL, 1 min per level. Funnily enough there is a material component listed in the header, but not explained in the description.

spell compendium:

+4 Str/Con/Cha/Natural AC (enhancement), immunity to sleep and paralysis, Sorcerers +1 CL, 1 min per level

Both fire for both paladins (level 4) and wizards/sorcerers level 5.

Edit: A compromise could be to fire the +5 bonus only if a sorcerer of draconic bloodline fires it?

I do realize that arcanists could Extend, but at 6sec/CL base, its still only 6 minute max.

Which is the same 6 minutes Divinates get!

Ithrinael raises an interesting question, though. Personally I'd lean in favor of the Spell Compendium interpretation for balancing.
