New Rule about Drow colors misses some book-canon ones.

Unread post by renshouj »

I feel like this change aimed at Skin Colors the most - and people were definitely using wrong colors for that, but it also hits some 100% canon valid (and not that rare) colors of eyes and hair.

From AD&D's Drow of the Underdark, the passage reads
The majority of drow have snow-white hair from birth, yellowing (if female) or graying (if male) and thinning with great age. Rare drow have naturally silver or copper-hued hair, although there are those who deliberately dye their hair silver (see the chapter on Drow Religion, under Eilistraee).

Most drow have red eyes. Others have green, brown, or black. Various shades of gray, even amber and rose-hued eyes are not unknown. All drow eyes tend to grow redder when they are angry or upset. Yellow eyes usually denote illness, disease, poisoning, or the presence of certain detrimental magics. Blue and purple (and all the tints thereof) are the most unusual eye colors, and usually denote human or surface-elven blood somewhere in the drows ancestry
And from D&D 3.5's Underdark
His hair can be pale yellow, silver, or white, and his eyes can be almost any color, including blood red.
Now, in the server itself we've had many examples of all the above. I remember one very famous drow-turned-dark-elf that took pride in her copper hair. We have examples in lore of copper-haired drow, maybe the biggest one being Vhaeraun himself (who's hair colour changed with emotion, copper-red being the one for anger and the one pictured in his images) and how copper hair was seen as a sign of being favored by him.

While I understand albino drow (szarkai) have deeper RP concerning them and agree they should likely have a bio approval because they could be mistaken for surface elves, I don't feel the same happens for copper-haired drow or green-eyed drow, so I feel we're missing some valid options that should be rectified.

I didn't realize it would change the UC too - which is interesting!

I am going to have to add some more colors - and fix a couple too - yes. I will look into it. Hairs I didn't really want to override becuase dyes. Some more eye colors we can add.

In terms of a copper color can you indicate what color your aiming for in a RGB hex?

It's difficult to pin one colour because different hairs have different lightness values which vastly change how different colours look. Also because of Mainlight and Highlight imo it's good to have many colours... Like you said, there's also the question of dyed hair and also also there's the case to talk about the "Hair Accessory" slot, which should be any color available (since its stuff like hair bows), and eyebrow colours which are often used by faces to tint stuff like makeup.

But like for example
I used these two colours for the four hairstyles below

(sidenote, the makeup on this face is governed by the "eyebrow color" section)

I think its quite obvious that it makes it hard to pin down what colours should be available when theres such a high degree of variance.

Again I fully think the skin colour stuff is warranted - Lightskin Drow and Lightskin Wild Elves (tho we still have these >.>) have always irked me a bit. But Hair color and Eye color, in my opinion, should not suffer the same restriction both as per common sense (hair dye) and as per book lore (quoted in my original post)

For the reference of what is copper hair... even IRL there's variance.

As an addendum, for eye colours, theres not only the matter that the book says that they can have pretty much any eye colour, but also the simple fact that classes/feats like Sorcerer and Heritages often show up as subtle external characteristics, like eye colour, so in general I think it'd be good to support a large variety of those as well.
