Race : human (Ffolk blood mixed with northmen’s)

Gender * female

Age * 20

Occupation * scout

Classes * base class ranger-hunter +++

Deity * Akadi

Alignment * lawful neutral

Nationality * once dual - Edenvale (plus Konigheim)

Background
Hidden: show
Born in the Utter East, Jana at first had a dual nationality with her father born in Konigheim and her mother in Edenvale. She was raised on the border of both kingdoms, but eventually leaned more towards the monarchy of Edenvale, and she followed her mother’s footsteps as a scout who was a border warden. She got to know both the kingdom and Edenvale Castle rather well, and during an event was recruited to join the kingdom’s armed forces. She was seventeen at the time.
Quickly it became clear her talents lie in the strategic development of the army, more specifically through performing reconnaissance, gathering intelligence, and securing resources. Only rarely she engaged in light combat, mostly to prevent enemy scouts from discovering too much of her kingdom’s army strength.
Jana has been nominated to become part of the Royal Scouts, a very small elite force operating at the utmost and anomalous borders with Konigheim. A group which also attempts to map magical gateways linking Edenvale and Konigheim with places beyond the World Pillar Mountains. This group also takes high interest in the Phantom Pass. These scouts answer to the Queen and the Queen only, and once chosen they are considered to be on par with nobility within their society.
Jana is also a fervent supporter of Queen Rosalind. Operating by the thought “Wind knows the truth before the Court”, Jana’s goal is to become such a good scout that said thought can be reversed.
She however still has a long path to go before earning the famous silver feather clasp. In order to be chosen she must refine her skills and talents, hence a few special training courses outside the kingdom, under all sorts of circumstances. Her first stop, the region of Baldur’s Gate.

At first glance
Hidden: show
Jana is a charming young female and she comes across as a bright appearance. Although such may have something to do with the orange color of her hair, it was more than that. People can quickly learn Jana is drawn to the land, and genuinely enjoys the extensive palette of sighseeings nature has to offer. She is very friendly and looks like a blank slate when it comes to Baldur’s policies and lore. Her outfit is simple, but for those who recognize, she also wears the colors of Edenvale on her.

Current status abilities (without gear)
Hidden: show
Strength 16 = Jana is a tad stronger than she looks like, well capable of wielding dual swords, and she can carry a full scouting pack for days. She is by far no brute as her strength is rather a practical wilderness strength.

Dexterity 14 = She has an excellent balance on rough terrain, is a steady archer and quick with physical reactions. She is not an acrobat or a lightning-fast duelist. Her dexterity comes from experience, but not from formal combat training.

Constitution 14 = Jana is tough and rather enduring. She is well able to perform lengthy marches, and enduring cold nights up in the mountains. Exhaustion she can overcome but extreme hardship (serious injuries, desert starvation) will challenge her.

Intelligence 14 = Jana remembers landscapes very well. After walking a road once, she can recall the bends in the trail, the water sources, potential hidden vantage points as well as ambush spots. She tends to learn new things rather fast without being scholarly academic, and picks up languages or unfamiliar dialects fairly okay.

Wisdom 8 = She is still inexperienced when it comes to dealing with ‘life’. Depending on the situation she can be overly trusting, or naive with people. For her it’s hard to read people who seem very confident, and it’s clear her focus is on the land and on facts, not always on motives. Jana may be smart, but sometimes just misjudges certain people.

Charisma 16 = It’s almost as if her real strength is her appearance, this rather natural presence. There seems zero courtly manipulation on her, just this honest magnetism. She may come across as very confident and trustworthy while she carries herself with quiet pride and a warm smile. She may be trusted quickly, and older soldiers may respect her even when she is still so young. And by the looks of it, she doesn't always seem to realize the effect she may have.

Jana's home

Down in the vale, she crouched near the stream, her head canting slightly as she oversaw the crystal clear surface right in front of her.

There!

Her fingers straightened and with a sharp twang the barbed arrow was launched. It was a smooth and consistent release, but also instinctive, aimed about two inch lower than the visual.

The angle proved to be accurate. Quickly she retrieved the pierced trout from the water and headed back home.

The forest around her was filled with chirping birds, their song only now and then interrupted by the soft rustling of leaves caught by the wind.

Right next to her the stream gurgled as she climbed over mossy logs and rock, and ducked under hanging branches. Some people found a walk like this stressful, but to her it brought a sense of peace.

The air was fresh and invigorating with every breath, the aroma of pine and earthy scents filling her nostrils. When she looked up, she marvelled at the colorful canopy filtering the sunlight into dappled golden patterns on the surface below.

Next to her a squirrel with a sudden burst of energy leapt from the ground onto the lower bark of a nearby tree. With masterful agility its tiny body, rapid and jerky, flew halfway up the wooden stem, only to stop midway to reorient itself before disappearing with total confidence into its arboreal habitat.

Her eye caught the smoke from a chimney moments before a structure came into view. A house with a bridge that was literally on the border between Edenvale and Konigheim.

“Mom, dad!? I’m home! With dinner!”

Jana's friend

She listened more carefully as she hid in the underbrush.

There was that sound again!

Something moved with this quiet flat-footed gait, and it moved slow and careful. Like… it was hunting?

The sound faded and all turned quiet again. Just when she was about to pop her head above the brightly colored foliage, a new sound caused her to freeze in the movement. It was a deep, raspy grinding of sorts, accompanied with the creaking of a tree. Up ahead she perceived the location of the sound. Dead leaves twirled down as the tree swayed lightly.

Wood cracked and snapped, and when her gaze shifted lower, she saw the wild animal. A brown bear! And it was rubbing its back into the bark like it had some itch.

It snorted in satisfaction.

She moved a little closer, but stopped and held her breath the moment she saw those small, rounded ears perking up.

The animal looked lazily about before it resumed with the rubbing.

Then, in the distance behind her, she picked up a different sound. Something like… barking?

Hunting dogs!

Oh no, she thought. They’ll find this amazing creature, kill it, and hang its fur up on their walls!

Without overthinking it, she jumped up and produced a high pitched sound that made the bear look over in her direction. Its eyes connected with her for a few moments.

The barking sounded louder now.

And then, faster than one would expect, the bear dashed off in the opposite direction, with an agility that allowed it to navigate through the thick brush and along any obstacles ahead.

The dogs however closed in on her position, so she ran off, headed into the river, and followed it upstream back to her home.

In the days after, she spotted a compact built form more than once in the vicinity of her place. But when her mother wanted to scare it off, she explained how she and the bear ‘met’.

Her mother nodded at her in understanding. “There might be potential bond here. I once had it too, with a bear as well. Until she passed away of age, right after you were born. Be careful however, Jana, let it first approach you rather than the other way around. It’s clear it already tolerates humans, but it remains a wild creature. Unpredictable. Well, until you know each other.”
