Timeline progression
i know that 1 day IRL is supposed to be 1 day IG, even though there are 4.5 days IG per IRL day. I know that some other servers maintain a 1:1 ratio, is there any reason why this is not the case on BG?

Re: Timeline progression
The reason is to not make mages super OP from level 1.
The spell duration is tied to the In-game clock, and if the IG clock counted 1 hour for 1 IRL hour, they'd take forever to run out.
Then there's also the fact that it can get tiresome to only be able to play at night, while others get to play at daytime [IG].
Only way I can think of of truly manipulating this time thingy is to have your character travel to another plane, with DM permission, and spend some time there. So long the said plane has a different time rate, it will either make your character only think of few minutes passing while days passed on Prime, or the opposite. Few minutes on prime equalling decades yonder.

Re: Timeline progression
The IG time = 12x RL time. 1 IG "day" = 2 RL hours. Or, more simply, 1 RL day = 12 IG days. This means, if we followed the IG clock*, then 1 RL month = 1 IG year. A RL year = 12 IG years.
On a practical matter, keeping the IG clock = RL clock just makes it really simple to keep track of time calendar-wise. Also, our PC's age at the same rate we do in RL.
IMHO, we would be far better off RP-wise if we followed the default game clock at 12x RL rate. Our PC's would age 12 years in a RL year so that L30 PC who started at adventuring at 18 is now 30 which is far more plausible than a 19 year old (have enough snowflakes with out tossing prodigy in the mix
). In 9 RL months from now, the server could be in the IG year 1358 DR when something truly interesting may happen to mix things up a bit. The female PCs could practically RP the mommy-track (RP a pregnancy in 3 RL weeks, in 19 months they could roll a new PC who is son or daughter of...). A RL day in the FF jail would be equal to 12 days time served. The IG day/night cycle would be completely understandable (1 RL hour day + 1 RL hour night = 1 IG day). Yes, your PC really did just spend a full IG day standing in one spot with out food, drink or potty break while chatting about whatever a the FAI campfire. OK, YMMV...
Again, the only true down-side is administratively; keeping our RL clock comprehending the IG 12x time factor. I myself would greatly appreciate a 12x clock. Many others may not.
