My question is this: For someone who is debating whether to see this movie, or just throw up their hands and consider the franchise dead, should they go see it?

Mark Hamill makes a very fair point in this interview and I do actually agree with him. I still enjoyed the movie though, because like it or not,Flasmix wrote:aaron22 wrote:My reasons for boycotting aren't for that. It's because they're literally butchering lore to the point where even Mark Hamill said he didn't like how Luke's character turned out.

Re: Star Wars- The Last Jedi. (Spoilers)
I appreciated it purely for the advancement of the saga, but not for much more than that. I will probably see the last of the new trilogy for the same reason, but I think the biggest disappointment in TLJ for me was that I went into the movie following TFA feeling invested in characters like Rey, Kylo, and Finn and left not caring much about them at all. I'm less interested in them than I've ever been. People will debate the movie's treatment of Luke and make fun of Mary Poppins Leia for years, but I knew after Force Awakens that the new characters would make or break the new saga. Last Jedi didn't just lead me to not care what happens to them from here, it made me actively dislike most of them.NeonAvenger wrote:My question is this: For someone who is debating whether to see this movie, or just throw up their hands and consider the franchise dead, should they go see it?

Re: Star Wars- The Last Jedi. (Spoilers)
Ok, I saw this movie yesterday in IMAX.
I have seen all the Star Wars movies in the theater.
This was the best Star Wars flick (next to Rogue 1) since Return of the Jedi. Period. Even Rogue 1 had it's severely annoying issues, but it was good.
This movie did have a lot of issues. Finn running away? WTH? He went to a planet gun voluntarily, even asked to go, and he wants to jump ship?
I still have no idea how Rey knows how to do the most complicated of force maneuvers and fighting with zero training. And what the crap was with the Dark Side cave? The cave, remember your training at the cave *imitating the voice of Yoda*
Who or what was Snoke, what was his purpose? He was obviously so powerful he could connect two jedi together. But if he could do that, why not just connect to her himself and get the location of Skywalker and bomb the planet? And why did he go out like a punk?
HOW CAN REY FIGHT LIKE A JEDI WITH NO TRAINING?!!!
The horse scene was a bit convoluted fluff, but the whole purpose of that was to show how much people wanted to help, wait, I mean the "downtrodden".
Yes, how can a cruiser and 2 frigates outrun Star Destroyers? Why didn't the empire just send a couple star destroyers ahead on the same heading at lightspeed to cut them off?
Why not have all the star destroyers track the ship? That whole active tracking in lightspeed sounds like new tech that would not be easy to duplicate? Why not just destroy it? If no one has heard of it. Why not change your engine output so it couldn't be tracked without re-configuring the thing?
Why the heck did Luke pull his lightsaber out with a sleeping padawan? Luke would never do that. Luke was all about finding the good in people. ALL ABOUT IT. I can see him going the hermit way if Kylo just pulled an Anakin and slaughtered everyone. But he tried to murder the boy in his sleep. And why use a lightsaber? Just force push a knife in his throat?
And the Cortosis guards... I can see Kylo's saber punching through them, as that thing is overcharged just below stable, but not slashing and killing those guards. Rey's saber could not just easily penetrate.
I think I saw the lightspeed jump into a ship on Star Wars Rebels, that may have been the precedent. But yes, as above, why not jump a junk ship full of high explosive (no nukes in star wars) and kill that marauder? Or any other ship? Run it from a droid or remote and boom, Imperials lose more than rebels spend. More economical.
Yoda popping in helped the movie a lot. It felt like original trilogy yoda, but was too chaotic in his thinking. And if he could affect the world like he did, why not just pop in and take out the emperor after he died?
Again, Rey is way too powerful with zero training. Did she get Lesson 3? I do not remember.
Hermit Luke was great (except for the reasons above). Most of what he said is exactly what I would expect by someone who was burned out and hiding from the force. But riddle me this: if he shut himself off from the force, why live at the temple? Why not go anywhere else if he was in complete hiding?
I will give Disney, Lucasfilm and Abrams kudos about not over doing it with the kids. Every one of the newer movies has kids being doing some stupid things or overdoing it to the point of "why are they here?" They did a good job.
They did go WAY overboard with the Tribbles though. Way overboard.
I still hate BB8 more and Jar Jar. But then I see the First Order have their own version of BB8!!! What?
All in all, it was a much better movie than the last 4 in the series. Just have to ignore episode 7 completely.
OOOH, yeah almost forgot. The Slicer was absolutely awesome! He had a very pragmatic, almost Jedi like outlook on life.
Sure he cost the lives of 200-350 rebels. But if he didn't betray them, Finn and his girlfriend would be dead.
Still, absolutely loved that character. Honestly, it should have been how Lando was... cold and as selfish as can be. If he stays on and picks a side, would make him even better for character development. But not enough movies for that, I am afraid. It took Solo all 3 movies to go from scruffy selfish nerfherder to a believer.....then for some reason left??? Anyways, that is more Episode 7 idiocy I dont want to get into.

Re: Star Wars- The Last Jedi. (Spoilers)
Saw it a second time yesterday.
Poe Dameron should have been executed like, three times over for 1) disobeying Leia's orders, 2) losing an entire bombing fleet, and 3) straight up mutiny (which ended up killing even more of his comrades).
Instead, his superiors are literally like, "He's a trouble maker, I like him." No wonder the Resistance is losing so badly!

Re: Star Wars- The Last Jedi. (Spoilers)
Thids wrote:The movie is garbage. I am pissed for allowing myself to get my hopes up after hearing that JJ won't be directing episode 8.
I'm not going to go through all the ridiculous stuff that happens in this movie, I'm just going to point out two things:
1. They destroyed the character of Luke Skywalker. There's no other way to put it. When the entire galaxy saw Vader as the biggest scumbag and villain in existence, and everyone gave up on him, Luke refused to kill him. He defeated him in combat, and then refused to kill him. Because he still saw hope for Vader. He still saw a glimmer of light in him. And now they are going to have me believe that Luke had a moment where he intended to kill his student, who has not even been turned fully yet? His sisters and best friends son? His nephew? Bull. (#2).
2. Rey is such a garbage character that it's actually infuriating. She had no training ever, she never overcame anything, she simply succeeds at everything. That is not how a narrative is supposed to go. A character is supposed to go through diversities and taste failure before succeeding. Overcoming hardships and getting back up on the horse is what makes that moment when they finally succeed worth it. I heard a comment somewhere, on a stream or a review maybe? Can't remember who said it exactly, but they said that if Empire Strikes Back was made today, Luke would have defeated Vader in Bespin, and the saga would have ended right there. And that is so very true. I don't think that Disney understands what exactly made Episode V such a great movie.
^^^
I agree with this, though to a lesser extent. My main gripe was with Luke's character standing over Ben Solo with his lightsaber lit, that part was BS. My secondary gripe was over Rey having no training and only just having 'awoken' her powers being able to do stuff that took Luke a month or more training with Yoda. Meanwhile she has a couple lessons over as many days from Luke (who's cut off from the force) and is able to lift all those rocks and toss them away. All the while Snoke talks about how Kylo Ren and Rey are the most powerful he's seen. WTF, Anikan/Vader was the immaculate conception/son of the mitichlorian with highest count ever, all the sudden these two both have more? Rey is a daughter of two druggies, where did she get all this power? Luke, Anikan, Obiwan, all the main character Jedi's in the past episodes have been shown failing, yet Rey succeeds with next to zero training.
All told I actually enjoyed the movie, but that was at least partly because my 7 year old son loved every minute of it. There was a lot of cool stuff going on, but Thids points out two things that were really poorly executed and told in the story.

Just seen the movie in IMAX with my teen age daughter, she loved every minute of it as well. That would leads me to think they hit the mark with the story line. I was 13 in 1977 when I first watched Star Wars. I can say that for me, I have strong emotional ties to the original characters. As for the latest movie I'll just say that I feel like they could have cut out about an hour of dumb S@&T.

The People in Charge wanted to put in everyone's face that everyone and everyone can become a Jedi. It is the worst of Post Modernism, making all the Dull becoming the Significant (at least in theory).

They are literally using Death Stars to get rid of the whole notion of the Midichlorians.
Luke even hints at this, using the 3 lectures to Rey. "The Jedi claimed the force belongs to them only."
Rey being unrelated to anyone also supports this. The Force is not genetic - the Force is a sapient existence that seeks to maintain balance in the world.
Anakin as the chosen one was created by the force to balance the overwhelming Light Side aspect.
Rey was created to balance Kylo and Snoke.
I personally prefer this interpretation of the Force over "microbes in your blood."
How to keep continuity though? Simple! Midichlorians enjoy being in the blood of those who are favored by the force.
However, "favored" is not exactly a good word. "People that the force chooses to be its primary actors" and "People who learned to force the Force to help them." Why? Luck. Everyone has luck - Han Solo, Poe, Finn, The ARC troopers; just to name a few very successful non-force sensitives. The Force affects and controls their destiny all the same as a Jedi's, except in more subtle ways.
